Do the oem plugs run all the way through 96-04? Or is it based on npi and pi?

There have been changes, the most significant being that because of the EDIS wasted spark ignition used on the '96 through '98 models you need to use double platinum plugs.

More about wasted spark systems here.

For your '98 the original replacement plug was the Motorcraft AWSF-32PP (PP as in double-platinum), however these have been discontinued. Their SP-432 is the current recommended plug.

Or Champion 7401 plugs, or Autolite APP104 (again with the PP)...

The '99 through '04 models have the coil-on-plug (COP) ignition system and need only single platinum (center electrode only) plugs...

Do you still have the EDIS ignition system (two coil packs and plug wires)? If so you need double platinum plugs.

I run Champions in everything we own¹ and currently have their # 7963 double platinum plugs in my '03. Not because the '03 regularly needs them but because I was running a beta test set of Weapon X COPs that fired in reverse polarity. If you did a full PI swap (heads too) they would be a good choice.

¹ - Champion has been making spark plugs for 110+ years, if there was a better way to make them they would have sorted it out by now--or bought up the technology.

I do not know what Motorcraft double platinum plug would be correct for the PI heads--as I said I run Champions in everything we own...
