ROMEO OR WINDSOR

How can you tell which 4.6 motor you have?
The windsor or the romeo.

Windsors were 99 to mid 01 and then they switched to the Romeo engines.

There is nothing in the VIN that will determine Romeo or Windsor--all GTs have an X in position 8, just indicating it is a 4.6L SOHC engine. I am on a mobile tablet right now, however I will post the Ford VIN decoder info later that shows this.

A lot of Mustang sites have this wrong, it's like the confusion over EV1 vs EV6 injectors...

All Romeo 4.6 engines have 6-bolt cranks; the Windsors came in 6 and 8 depending on application--all Mustang Windsor engines are 8-bolt.

Re the VIN engine code: this (below) is from the 2000 MY VIN decoder on Ford's online VIN tools site:

You can see the X engine code indicating a 4.6L SOHC Mustang engine made in Windsor (the W in the engine/liter column). The W VIN engine code is for the engines used in other Ford products, still made at the Romeo plant in 2000...

Functionally, not a thing.

Mechanically there are a number of differences, too many to get into here; just Google "Romeo vs Windsor" and start reading (ignoring the W vs X VIN myth of course).

This is a good article from Engine Builder magazine...
