tuner help

I have a SCT tuner I was hooking it up to check the check engine light and I notice this wire that plugs into a little circut board with a turn nob on it.. I started the car and turned the knob and the car instantly shut off I turn the key off and then back on car starts back up.. I looked at the little circuit board and it says SCT on it.. I tried to trace the wire and it heads in the direction of the computer.. is this a way they tuned the cars before the handheld tuners.. obviously this was done before i bought the car.. thanks for any help

It might be one where it plugs into the computer and you can switch them with that knob. The car has to be off in order to switch it though.

It is likely SCT's 4-bank chip, a daughter board that connects to the PCM's J3 port. It allows as many as 4 tunes to be switched into use (engine off) without reflashing the PCM which takes 3 minutes or so...

To use flash tuning it would have to be removed...

This is a similar device, from Delta Force Tuning, allowing as many as 8 tunes:

You need to remove the "chip" before reflashing the PCM EEPROM will do anything.

You need to contact SCT, tell them everything you have done with regard to flashing tunes, and seek their advice--leave nothing out or they will not be able to help.

If the handheld tuner produced no errors when flashing a tune then it is likely that that tune is loaded into the PCM's EEPROM flash memory. However the "chip" overrides that memory (maps over it) and causes the PCM to ignore the flash memory and run the tune from the chip.

Most likely removing the chip will cause the PCM to run the most recently flashed (from the handheld unit) tune; but you really need to talk to SCT to make sure you do not "brick" your PCM...
