V6 has a t5, your car has a t3650. Your mechanic is correct you can't use a v6 trans.

Close, the 04 GT had the upgraded 4R75W.
All the rest had the 4R70W and can be interchanged.

Soo if I buy a 4R70W trans it'll bolt right in and work just fine?

Ugh... NO you cannot interchange them. They don't have bellhousings, the whole trans is one piece and the modular bolt pattern is different than a v6. If you have an 01 you need a 4r70w out of a 99-03 v8.

I think when you said "all the rest" they thought you mean V6 and V8. Totally different bolt patterns. Also not sure who the hell thinks that automatics have separate bellhousings...

Wow thanks! Ok so I found a transmission on craigslist its the 4r70w but the guy keeps on telling me that its the same for v6 and v8 how can I make sure that trans came out of a v8?

Look at the bolt patterns.
This took me 45 minutes of forum digging to find. I found it in an ancient Corral thread and the poster said he had never seen it posted before so he made it himself.
This is a photo of the modular vs. Windsor bellhousing bolt pattern.
SAVE THIS PHOTO BECAUSE IT IS THE ONLY ONE YOU WILL EVER FIND

I would not buy the trans from that guy as he is obviously a moron. If he doesn't know wtf its out of or is telling you its the same I'd be 99% its a V6 trans and he is trying to sell it as a V8. They are not the same, period, end of story. If its THAT good of a deal and it looks new have the guy send you a pic of the bell or just go look at the trans but don't get surprised if the guy gets all confrontational if its a V6 trans and you tell him that.

That pic is good, I saved it. However, easy way to tell... If the starter bolt on area has 3 bolts its a V8, if it has 2 bolts its a V6. Don't even need those pics, just gotta look at the starter. I mean you can see in the pic what I am talking about. 3 bolts on the left = V8, 2 bolts on the right= v6 or pushrod V8.

That is a V6 transmission and will not bolt up to a 4.6L as I figured if the guy was trying to tell you it was the same thing.

I actually find I get more out of these forums than I do out of the Corral... ever since that forum got sold its really gone downhill. Classifieds are still good but still... haven't been on stangnet in years, maybe I'll try them again... Will stick around here for awhile though.

Hopefully that guy doesn't screw over anyone who doesn't know any better but it honestly is the responsibility of the buyer to know what they are getting hence the OP making a thread like this which is good on him.

They have made efforts here to protect us. Nothing is perfect as far as that goes. There are some great people on here. I don't do any other forums other than this one.

The only other forums I frequent are ModdedMustangs and SVTPerformance.
MM has some of the smartest people I have ever seen when it comes to these motors. A handful can make even Cliffyk look like a novice (no offense to him at all).
