Spark plugs and COP

Can someone help me change these and give me hints. I looked for a write up to help but no luck. I know the coil packs are easy but how and what do I need to get and do for the spark plugs?

4.6? And if so you need a spark plug socket , the size is 5/8 if I remember correctly and a 6 in extension on a ratchet and that all the tools you need. Make sure you put anti seize on the threads and dielectric grease on the COP connector to spark plug and some on the tip of the spark plug that connects to the COP. And DO Not over tighten the spark plugs at all

At most the intake, you can work around the fuel rails

Do I really need to blow out the ports of the plugs? Is that like a must or will I be fine just changing them?

Okay. How long do you think it should take to change 8 plugs and 8 COP?

Assuming you dont have to take the intake off to reach the passenger side plugs, like 15 mins. Make sure to get a spark plug gapper and gap your plugs to .054

Yeah I already gapped them when I got them. I'm going to summit monday and getting 8 motorcraft coils because I'm tired of dealing with it lol it's cheaper me buying them all then paying ford to replace one or two

Good choice, the Motorcraft ones are independently tested to be far and away the best COPs. Also get a cheap Harbor Freight 1/4" drive torque wrench if you don't already have one. Make omfg sure you torque the plugs to spec and do NOT overtighten. 11-13 ft lbs is good.

Where can I get a torque wrench like that? The one I have is a tad too big lol it goes to 180 foot pounds so 11 is basically impossible

Lol Harbor Freight like I said or any tool manufacturer makes them, HF just has them for cheap.

Click me. Its on sale too, I might get another one for the old man, he just got a 3V F-150 but at 30k miles and not being his DD he probably won't have to worry about it for 10 years...

What I meant was will an auto place have something like that. I'm ready to get my car right again! Haha I don't want to have to wait for something like that to have to ship when I can go down the street. Summit is an hour away so I'm getting my coils Monday and working on it Tuesday

Go on the harbor freight website and see if they have a store local to you. I know you want to get your car right but if it comes down to using a torque wrench for your plugs and not using a torque wrench for your plugs you are going to have to suck it up and wait if there is nothing local to you. Unless you like towing your car into the dealer for timeserts at best or a cylinder head replacement at worst. Even the newer PI heads have issues with the plugs, the older ones like the ones you have are notorious.

I think that HF one is a 20-200 in-lbs wrench though.

Yeah it is so just multiply the ft lbs by 12 to get the inch lbs. Right around 145 is good for 12ft lbs.

Not to me personally but it is a well known issue with earlier PI heads. Plenty of guys over on the Ford-Truck forums that have had it happen to them on their 5.4s. I'm a nazi when it comes to spark plugs and aluminum heads.

If my car ever messes up I still wouldn't take to ford unless it was a brand new car. I have a guy who changed all of my spark plugs for. $25 while another place wanted $100 to do it.

Okay I contacted summit and they won't have motorcraft coils till July basically.. What should I do? Everywhere else wants to charge me an outrageous amount for motorcraft. Is there another brand that is good or should I just suck it up and go to the ford place?

I was just on their website and it says estimated ship date tomorrow for the Motorcraft coils. If that is untrue then try rockauto. Rockauto has them for the same price IIRC and they might be able to get them to you sooner.

And no, you want to stick with Motorcraft for the coils.

edit: Actually rockauto has them for about $10 cheaper than summit lol. Part number is DG508 and they are $42.79. So figure around $360 shipped for all of them.

They can ship one of them tomorrow but I'm replacing all 8 and the other 7 are on back order till the end of June.

543 is for the 4Vs, 508 is for the 2Vs. Get them from rockauto anyway.

This is why I hate Summit, FOREVER they have failed to properly setup their ordering system. Example is when I just searched for the COPs on Summit, the best you can do is your year/model/engine. No trim options available at all and the engine option is just 4.6L, not DOHC or SOHC even though in 2003, for example, there are two 4.6Ls and they use different parts.

Rockauto is so simple that it is nearly idiotproof. You can't get any easier than that and I honestly have not ordered a part from Summit in YEARS because of Rockauto. Also half the stuff Summit sells is for the boy racers and is junk or overpriced or both.

Did you use a spark plug socket or did you just use a deep socket?
