2003 Mustang 3.8 5 speed.

Hey I'm new here and I just bought a 2003 mustang. It's a 5 speed 3.8 and while driving it today when i put it in reverse theres a grinding noise. Now it seems to go in reverse just fine. It's while i am actually in reverse.

I can put it in reverse on a hill and keep the clutch pushed all the way to the floor and while im rolling backwards it will make a bad grinding noise. Any help is much appreciated

Thanks!

i have the same problem with my 97, i believe.its.due to the reverse gear not being synchronized.....gotta be at a complete stop to engage reverse,i even have to do the first to reverse to align the shift rail so that grinding doesnt occur....someone correct me if im wrong!

The 3.8 has a T5/T45 which is notorious for being a bear to get into reverse. Try sticking it in 5th and then into reverse. It lines up the shift linkage since 5 and R are on the same set. I did that back on my old sixxer and it slipped straight into R every time.

Try shifting in third first than reverse. If I start my car and put in reverse it grinds that's why I like to do it when the cars off

If I understand your question correctly, the transmission goes into reverse alright. It's while you're moving in reverse that the noise occurs. It could possibly be your rearend. Have someone drive your car in reverse while you stand outside and try to determine where the noise is coming from. The brakes can sometimes be noisy while backing up also. Welcome to the forum.!
