My alternator has a shortage

My alternator works most of the time but every now in then i have to tap on it with a screwdriver to make it charge. Okay is this fixable or should I just buy another one.

It means the brushes are sticking the their holders. They may be worn beyond the service limit or just gunked up, the only way to tell is to disassemble the generator. A local "auto-electric" shop can do this, and rebuild the generator if needed, or just buy a new one--do it before it destroys the battery or you will be replacing that too...

What's an alternator run, about $100? I'd just pick up a new one rather then rebuilding the old. You could fork up a little more cash and buy an alternator with a life time warranty. In my 240sx I bought a lifetime warranty alternator from autozone about 10 years ago for $75 and I've only had to replace it once.
