crank but wont start

ok i have a 96 4.6. it will crank but wont start. usually i think its because it may be way to low in gas or my fuel pump. but not this time. it will start (if im lucky), idle at 500-1000 rpm then go lower and lower until it dies. somebody help!

if you have a fuel pressure gauge now is the time to use it to see fuel pressure if it is the pump failing to watch it drop, another thing also may be a maf sensor, that also could when the car runs lower idle to shut down, as well as a iac. as for gas, buy a 5 gal or 3 gal jug of gas to put in the car to rule gas out if gas isnt the problem, however if it was then there u go its fixed lol.

As mentioned above, sounds like your fuel pump is finished. Try to not let your fuel level get below a quarter tank. The fuel is the coolant for the pump. It decreases their life greatly by running your car low on fuel, or worse, out of fuel. Don't forget to put in a new filter also.
