4.6 vs new 5.0

Just raced a 2012 GT with my 04 GT and I thought it would have pulled away like crazy, it didn't. I have 4.10 gears and a few other bolt ons but nothing major. After racing the 5.0 I will stick with my 4.6, which sounds meaner at full throttle. Any thoughts?

He must have just got the car, shouldnt be that close. but i love my gt :p. im saving for a supercharger. The new coyote motors are amazing but the2v's do have some potential for big numbers. The 99-04 and the newer model stangs are the best looking imo. Ill have one or the other and love it.

Just got my BAMA power tuner and was running the race program so either way it way fun. Almost went sideways at about 40 when it shifted gears.

That's sick. New Edge power! And I love the color! I'm promising when I get the money and one comes across I'm going to get a Termi in that color.

Comp. orange is a great color. I love that with some blacked out tint around and black rims.

Maybe it was a bone stock base 5.0. I know if their both stoc and a 4.6 has only 100 shot it'll take the 5.0 every time

how even if a bone stock 2v with a 100 shot still wont put down the power a 5.0 does

We also have to keep in mind that the new edge mustang is ~400 lbs less than the new 5.0. If he had a long gear and was bone stock and maybe the OP has a full bolt on car with a really short rear gear I could see how it's possible to keep up to a point. But at this point "keeping up" is a relative term, what he may consider keeping up could be what many of us feel is getting walked...

gee I had to reread the first part of the thread three times...I was thinking old 5.0 and it was not computing. lol
I know the ford engineers went all out to get the distinctive sound of a "mustang" with the 4.6 love the way it sounds, can t wait to get my car together...and see what I can get out of it.

Lol you sure it wasn't a 3.7? That'd explain why the 4.6 sounded meaner to ya..

I LOVE threads like these. Go to a 1/4 track and watch the bolt on PI cars in the mid 12s which is what a stock or very mild 5.0 will be running.

Fact of the matter is that the more powerful car doesn't always win. A PI New Edge with all the bolt ons, gears and a good tune is going to be a very quick car off the line even compared to some of the newer stuff out these days. Put sticky tires and some suspension work on and it becomes even better. I don't have the fastest car in the world but I will out launch a LOT of cars making more power than I do and gears/driver mod make up for a lot. Once the supercharger goes on this one it should be pretty entertaining to drive on the street while I build my Teksid.

Talking about IRL. Example, dude at Atco had a 99 PI automatic, 3500 RPM stall, all the "bolt ons", some suspension work, fats/skinnies, trans was j-modded. Ran a 12.5 1/4 mile on the stock PI heads/cams/intake. Hell a 94/95 Cobra 5.0 can do 12s on the stock longblock too. Sticky tires, gears, bolt ons and driver mod. Co-worker of mine did it way the hell back in 2003 in DE with a 94 Cobra at 12.9 and then 12.8 when he put an E cam in it.

edit: As for that 99, he said he was barely breaking a 13.0 before he did the stall converter. Autos will skull **** you at the 1/4...

Ugh I haven't been in forever, I don't even know if I had a smartphone at the time lol, like 2 or 3 years ago. I need to get back, if nothing else to see what the 98 will do.

you should do pretty well. if i was ever going to own another 2v it'd have to be an sn95 so it could get a pi swap like yours. gotta love the compression difference. and i will admit i'm wrong. i went on drag times (my favorite site for mods vs times lol) and found an '03 with full bolt ons and gears hit a 12.9.

Nobody ever believes how fast the older Mustangs are until they see them in action, that's why I'm never afraid to race anything. And my car isn't a traditional PI swap, its an entire PI motor out of a 99 so regular PI compression which is good because a supercharger is going on the thing this winter.

Again, for the 4.6 vs the 5.0... the cost to get into a 5.0 is kind of prohibitive for what you get which is a mid 12 second car. And if you want something that starts out that fast... the Terminator is still FAR and away better than the new 5.0 IMO, it isn't even close. That's going to be one of those cars that becomes a legend like some of the old Muscle cars did. Heck, it already is and you can get them clean with low miles for half of what a new 5.0 will cost you.

I remember reading about what that thing would have when it came out and was like... "wait seriously they're going to fully forge it AND put a Supercharger on it AND a 6 speed?!?!?!?!". Mind you this was back in 2001/2002 when it was not out yet and all we had was the ridiculously expensive 00R to put up against the F bodies. Then the Termi comes along and is pulling on Z06s, forget the Camarobirds.

but in the end it still comes down to full bolt on, gears, and tuned 2v to run close to a stock 5.0. yeah for less money you can build a 2v to go faster then a stock 5.0, but then again you toss the same mods at the 5.0 and well...in the end someone is always going to be faster. everyone should just love what they drive for what it is...that all being said i believe we side tracked OP's thread lol.

@OP...any slips?

I have owned a camaro, a 3000gt vr4 and an 83 vette but this is the only car that people give a second glance and then a thumbs up to. I find myself looking for places to go just to be able to drive her. I love my orange crush

This is why I love owning a 96-98 modular. NOBODY takes them seriously and it is my firm belief that the greatest sleeper alive is a Mustang GT with a "4.6L GT" badge on the side of it. And yeah you nail it off the launch, they panic in 1st and blow their tires off, get sideways, finally hook up in 2nd and bog and by then you've made your point and are letting off the gas.
