Exhaust leak and bad TOB?

My car has been running rough and lacking pizzazz the last few days. I have noticed a increase in heat in my dash area, a sputtering exhaust note at times, less acceleration at WOT and sounds like my exhaust is quieter and coming from further up. Are these signs of an exhaust leak? How would I narrow the location down? Also noticed a whirling sound and rattle that goes away when my clutch is depressed. Used the search function and seems to be a bad TOB from what i gathered. Not sure what my next action should be.

No cel. Have been suspecting TOB for 6 months, just been putting it off. Nothing has been done to the transmission only thing to the exhaust has been cat back exhaust. Seems to be an expensive fix to replace TOB. Will this escalate to other problem.

Notice exhaust problem 3 days ago, almost felt something "give" while driving. Car runs and operates fine in every other aspect.

No exhaust has been put on and running fine for 4 months. Mid pipe is pretty rusty. Bad cat or gasket maybe?

If you get more heat feeling fron the dash area i would check on the flanges from the cat back. Maybe it came loose or someplace further up. Have the car jacked up, supported and idle the car to see if u can pinpoint it. As well as have someone rev it little by little to find a exhaust leak just in case

Sounds like a PITA. Could be flanges, bolts were rusted, could have come lose. Hope its that easy of a fix.

It could be mine had a rattle and heat from the floor board. My x pipe lost a bolt had to replace it and it felt like she was running poorly

Concluded that the problem is a bad cat. Gives me an excuse to get a new midpipe

Anyone know where i can get exhaust hardware. 8 bolts all together, or at least the specs. Also 2 gaskets are needed for mid pipe install correct?

Don't mean to thread jack, but I recently was rushed over a speed bump by the a**hole behind me and I pretty much destroyed a cat, and cracked a muffler, leaving me with a gnarly exhaust leakage :bang head: . So this leads me to ask, should I just go catless, or replace the cats. I don't have to pass emissions, so no worries there. I have bassani o/r x with slp lm1. Anyone know how that sounds with no cats? Thanks in advance

A Bassani Catless x pipe and SLP lm1s will sound amazing.

I cut my cats off and ran no cats through flowmasters and my sound barely changed. So I'd say cats don't do **** for sound is you got mufflers. I just cut the cats off and put a straight pipe instead but what get you do do not leave the leak it will cause sensor problems.

Had a hard time understanding what you meant, but at one point you did say do do. And i replaced my midpipe entirely and it def changed the sound.

I think I may have an exhaust leak as well. Car is responding the same as always but can hear a little hiss sound upon hard acceleration, and have noticed more heat than usual coming from the center console/center floor board area.

I replaced the midpipe but idk if its better. If its not there then it must be at the manifold...

Greenbean: does your center console (near the e-brake area) feel hot to the touch after a longer drive of 40 mins or so? This is where I notice the heat mostly on mine and I have heard a small metal rattle noise at certain rpm levels when I let the clutch out. I hit a high man hole cover and and since then the small hissing, rattle and heat have seemed much worse on mine. Thinking something on the exhaust has come loose near the mid pipe I'm assuming where it connects to the stock manifolds? Just trying to diagnose mine before I get under there, lol.

If i had a leak at the manifold i found some use bbk shorty headers for $150, does anyone know about the quality/sound of these products.

I've always heard good things about BBK headers and there product line in general for the most part. My brother had BBK shorties on a 91 notch and they sounded really good. I realize that's a different motor but I would expect that they sound good on a 4.6 as well.

I think I'm gonna take mine in to the local muffler shop and have them look it over and see what they find. Free inspection at my local Midas shop as the guys there seem to be pretty good with all the exhaust change outs I have done. Ill post my findings after I finally get it up there to them (if anyone cares, haha). I'm thinking of ordering a new o/r x pipe if the issue is with the connection, may not be necessary but it gives me a reason to try something else. I've heard decent things about the Pypes x pipe and the UPR x pipe, both are true x pipes vs the chambered style x pipe I have with my current BBK x pipe. Any opinions on the Pypes or UPR x pipes?

I know everyone says dont waste time/money on shortys, but i am not looking for huge hp gains, i just need a factory replacements for my stock manifolds. Are bbk shortys a good brand with quality and what can i expect as far as sound difference.

Maybe plasti-dip your entire exhaust and it will take care of the leaks? Jk.
