Need gear suggestions

I have a 98 gt stock except for intake and short shifter. Exhaust is coming soon but I wanna do gears to get better track times. It's not my daily driver but I don't quite wanna go to 410 gears. I'm thinking 373's. my question is can I do this in my garage with basic tools and should i go all out with 410's?

It's not the tools or location, it's knowing how to set up the lash using shims.

+1. 90% of the time though it goes back together perfect just re-using the stock shims as long and you keep them on their original side. But even still you need to have the guage to measure the lash and make sure its in tolerance. You also need a tool to measure the resistance on the pinion nut.
