Throw out bearing

I've have some signs that maybe my tob about to **** out. Few questions. When it's goes bad does it just completely fail or can it be strung out. And can I replace this myself with basic garage tools and jack stands. My car at idle was grinding whining at the stop light and stopped making that noise when I pushed in the clutch. I have no problems getting it in any gear it's all fine besides that noise at the stop light. Normal highway diving I can hear the shifter there make noise but figure that's just because the tranny is right tere without any sound deadening

You can drive it like that for awhile. Transmission obviously has to come completely out to do it so if you think you can do that in your driveway then you should be G2G. Might as well do the clutch too and the pilot bearing should be done any time you have the trans out.

I drove for almost a year on a tob that was going bad, but then I barely drive 300-500 miles per month.

Can be done in your drive way, you'll need 4 good Jack stands. If also suggest breaker bars of varying sizes, with various lengths of extensions, and swivel/universal connectors.

Also an extra set of hands would be ideal.

Lastly I'd recommend renting a slide hammer/puller for the pilot bearing.

Mine started to chirp shortly after I bought it, then about a year later it completely went and was making either a horrible screeching noise, or a loud grinding noise. It was at that point that I replaced the clutch.

Yeah that always sucks. I'm gonna plan on doing this this summer so I might start buying the parts this winter/spring just so I have everything and don't have to buy it at once.

Do you have a short throw shifter? Reason I ask is I thought my tob was going bad to until I found out a short shifter doesn't block out transmission noise as well as the stock shifter so its normal to hear transmission whine.

A transmission noise vs a noise that goes away when you push in the clutch will be different. TOB is a noticeable chirping. Trans noise from the shifter is not like that.

I've not had any problems with it noise wise or anything. I'm still thinking about replacing tob pilot clutch and flywheels this summer. If it's not bad by then I'm thinking cams.

You might want to consider that as an option before taking your tranny apart for a tob. I put a cobra bob shifter gasket on my shifter and it helped with the noise a bit. While I had it open I did a full transmission fluid swap with royal purple manual transmission fluid. It shifts a lot smoother and was suppose to help with some noise but I still have a lot of noise coming from the tranny as well. I've heard of people putting dynomat around the inside of the shifter boot and that was suppose to help with noise too but I haven't done that yet. I'm just accepting the noise as normal for now. The only con I have found from the short throw is that annoying extra noise.

The more **** you do to the car the louder it will be. Mine's so noisy when I'm driving that I have to have my phone routed through my speakers to hear anything if I need to make a call on the road (hands free for the phone police). And this is quieter than my 91 was. Lol my ears would ring after I got out of that after more than 20 or 30 minutes of driving haha.

But as far as shifter noise, they all do it except for the MGW which is a lot quieter.

Well I'll see where I'm at this summer cuz I'd like to do tranny work and cams. I could do cams myself and then take to a tuner.
