Nice $5 clutch freeplay kit for modulars

Been meaning to do a write up on this for us 96-04 guys. The article on this site sucks a bag, or at least it does not work for the t-45/3650. Probably fits a T-5 bell though. Anyway...

Got everything from Lowe's for $5 or so. You need only 3 pieces which are:

Spring. This is in the hardware section next to the nuts/bolts etc...

1/2" PVC coupler. This is for conduit in the electrical secton.

1/2" PVC box adapter. Also for conduit in the electrical section.

Assemble like so

Slide the PVC over the c-clip holding the clutch cable in the bell, slide the spring over the end of the cable (will take a little playing with it to make it go) and put the cable back.

This works much better with a firewall adjuster and I like the MM quadrant for your quadrant needs. Use the firewall adjuster to get the slack out of the cable, and then crawl under the car while the motor is running (chock the crap out of it, do not grab anything hot etc... not my fault if you hurt yourself by being an idiot).

Adjust the firewall adjuster out until the TOB starts to spin from contacting the clutch fingers, then back off a click or two until it stops. Your clutch is now properly adjusted and the spring will keep the TOB off the clutch fingers and help or eliminate the TOB squealing.

Also, your dust cover will be a very tight fit now, I had to push on the tabs that slide into the bellhousing a little with my fingers to make them go back into place. Nothing serious.

Hope this helps anyone thinking of doing it. No idea why something like this isn't installed from the factory seeing as the damn clutch fork has a bad habit of letting the TOB ride on the clutch.

Nice write up. I wanted to do this this week, however, literally every hardware store in my area did not have the correct spring.

I could have ordered it online but then have to deal with shipping, and most places only offered like packs of 5 or 6 springs for like $10.

I found this place and just ordered from them, $19 is steep but I didn't really have to many other options.

If you can find the parts locally deff go that route as the OP recommends cause it's cheaper. But if you live in the boonies like me, $19 with free shipping ain't all that bad.

It's a wonder to me why Ford didn't just do something like this from the get go.

That kit is nice too, I just am not sure about a spring that long. But yeah that kit you linked is the old lethal kit and they have free shipping via USPS too.

But all the stuff I listed is available at any Lowes which is a pretty big national chain so I think most ppl will be good.
