1996 3.8l v6 over heating

Have recently got a 96 mustang and for awhile it was running fine it then started to over heat I checked the coolant and I had ran it dry I filled it up and proceeded to drive and it again was over heating and no hot air coming from heater what could the problem be? Could it be air trapped in the system? Please help!
