6 bolt flywheel on t45

If I get a 6 bolt flywheel for late 01-04 stangs can I use a clutch made for late 01-04 too? I have an early 01 with t45.

The reason I ask is because exedy is sending me out a new clutch because the last one had a defect. Long story short they messed up and I can get pretty much any clutch I want. I asked for a stage 2 for the t45. He said since they are out he can send me out a 6 bolt flywheel and stage 2 clutch for late 01-04. Will this work?

Okay so I just got under my car. I have a 6 bolt flywheel? T45 are supposed to have 8 bolt I thought. I for sure have t45 Bcuz drain plug is on the side. And car was built in 09/00. Why do I have a 6 bolt flywheel?

So this is the clutch exedy said they would send me http://www.americanmuscle.com/exedy-...ch-9604gt.html
This is the flywheel.
http://www.americanmuscle.com/exedy-...604-6bolt.html

I went ahold and told them to send these because I read the 10.5 and 11" clutches are interchangeable as long ur flywheel will work with one or the other. I called AM to confirm that flywheel works with both 10.5 and 11. I thought early 01 had a 8 bolt pattern on the crank case. For some reason I have a 6 bolt pattern so I'm assuming that flywheel will work even tho it's for late 01. Here is pic of my flywheel

Here is pic of my door sticker showing I should have the t45 with 8 bolt pattern.

Now I'm kinda curious what's going on here lol.
Does anyone know why I have a 6 bolt pattern and a t45?

Count the valve cover bolts. Maybe somebody swapped in a Romeo motor at some point??

I could be wrong, but I think that Cobra's got the 11" 8 bolt main. GT's 10.5" 6 bolt.

The Cobras share the same flywheel 8 bolt pattern with the Windsor motors

Cobras had teksid blocks until early 01. This is just a guess... Maybe early 01's would fall under the 8 bolt main for cobras and 6 bolt for GT's Could be why OP has a 6 bolt.

The block isn't what makes a difference in how many bolts it has. They all still used the same crank (for the Cobras besides 03/04 and the auto Machs) I still think the OP might has possibly gotten an engine swapped by a previous owner.

All 4.6 Cobras, and windsor 4.6's were an 8 bolt crank. ONLY Romeo blocks came with 6 bolts. The valve cover bolts will tell you if its a windsor or Romeo.

Ford switched from the Windsor engine plant to the Romeo engine plant around 01', so the OP could have one of the first Romeo built engines. It really doesn't matter, as long as the flywheel matches the crank......lol

Counted my valve cover bolts today and I do indeed have a Romeo block with 11 bolts. Seems like the owner would have told me about the swap. He was the original owner and was a clean cut and dorky kind of guy. Is it possible that I just happen to have the t45 and a Romeo block from factory? Since 01 was a weird year and all. Or is it just about for sure a motor swap?

Like I said, around that time is when Ford switched from Windsor to Romeo, so I think its very possible you still have the original engine. But that's a moot point really, since you know what's in there now.

Wish I had the pink 21/lbs injectors too lol. Is there anyway to match the engine to the body?

Early 01 was the transition year. You may very well have a Windsor cast crank in a romeo setup because Ford was just finishing up using their old stock.

If you have an 8 bolt crank get an 8 bolt flywheel. The transmission has 0 to do with how many bolts are on the flywheel.

Update: Well I'll start by telling the whole story about what happened. I order a exedy stage 1 clutch from AM, got it installed and had a vibration. Checked everything over and came to the conclusion the clutch must be out of balance. Contacted AM about an exchange and because it's still under warranty I had to deal with manufacturer. Called exedy and spoke to a tech. He said I must send it in and they will test it. If bad, they'll send a new one. I asked him how long it took them to test it because it's my dd and he said a day turn around time once they received it. I sent it in and had to pay the $45 shipping cost and no reimbursement whether bad or not. Whatever I just needed my car back on the road as soon as possible. I sent him an email when I sent it and told him the arrival date. No reply. It took a week to get there. It arrived on a Monday and I didn't hear any thing. The following Wednesday I called and no answer. That Friday I called no answer. The next week I sent him an email Tuesday. FINALLY a reply. Wednesday he emailed replied and apologized and said I could pick what clutch I wanted. I emailed back for a stage 2 10.5" for the t45. Thursday he emailed back saying they did not have it and that he could send me a stage 2 11" for tr3650 and a light weight flywheel that will work with that clutch. So after almost two weeks he sent out a new clutch and a flywheel. It may sound like I'm complaining but I'm actually very thankful. My post sounds angry because I spent much more time frustrated than I did happy. But exedy apologized and they went out of their way to take care of me. They let me upgrade clutches and sent a new flywheel. Total it has been a month since I initially sent it out to them and actually received my new one. So if you have to deal with exedy they may lag but will take care of you. I was very nervous when I found out I wouldn't be dealing with AM initially. Glad to know that AM deals with companies like this. I am installing it Friday to make sure everything is all good and then I am going to send exedy a nice thank you email. Overall I'm stoked lol Click image for larger version
