4.6L Engine Sound Question

Last Saturday I checked out a 03 mustang gt with 116k on it.

I popped the hood, and just listen to the engine idle and it seemed fine to me, but I don't own a GT. My question is: Do these 4.6L's have a sort of "Purr" to them? I want to say it's a ticking sound, but i don't want you guys to over think that, because it's not like a rod knocking or ticking. It seemed like a normal engine tick/purr. It was just idling, I didn't rev it when I was hearing it. The car ran great, and was strong pulling. I just want to make sure this isn't a mechanical issue that I'll regret if I buy the car. I'm sort of freaking out and don't want to get a GT, and the engine blow in 10k miles. I have seen a few story's of the engines going fairly early and it scares me...

Thanks!

Could be just the injectors ..

Or maybe a exhaust leak?

A internal problem like a bent valve or rod, is very noticeable.

You will be able to hear a little bit of a mechanical sound as the engine cycles. It's normal. It sounds like a metal spider would if it were walking across a table. That's what I picture at least. Haha

Ok, so anything major is going to be noticeable right? Would I feel/notice it just by driving it?

I could see that. I thought of it as sort of a diesels idle, except in quiet little ticks instead of loud cranks that the diesel gives out.

You will definitely know if something is wrong. The engine will let you know. If it runs smooth and it feels smooth then there probably isn't a problem. Especially if it idles at a consistent rpm.

I have the same idle sound with my 2003 4.6l and yes it does have a distinct "quiet diesel sound" it's normal for me and the car runs strong and smooth. So if nothing else points out problems if say the engine is just fine

Slow4V def hit the nail on the head with the injectors. That thin *** manifold we have allows you to hear errrrrrthang. When I put my long tubes on I could hear much more noise since they're so much thinner than the paper weight manifolds.
