check engine help!

So my registration fee is coming up, and I need help on passing the emissions testing. I went to auto zone, oreily, and a local shop to check why it was turned on, they all said , heated O2 sensor, bank 1 sensor 2. The thing is that they werent sure which sensor it was. Can anybody tell me?

My dad is also a mechanic, and he reccomended me to just change the catalytic converter, the problem is that I dont know which one I should change to, if so can someone tell me which I should switch out?

Bank 1 is passenger side. #2 is the downstream sensor.

Are you sure the sensor working? The wire could also have a short.

Honestly Im not, alot of people told me that it is more likely it was the upstream sensor, and honestly Im not sure if it has a short or not, Ill check, I did notice it was a little dirty, Ill switch the sensor out tomorow, and see if it is that sensor.

It's downstream, and passengers side as escottcarp said. It's a common issue

What was the code? There are seven or eight DTCs that reference the rear O2 sensors?

Get the code and look it up here to see the Mustang specific description, possible causes and diagnostic tips...

Will it clear with the scanner at the parts store? I had a cel and got it cleared and it never came back. Corresponding code was for the egr valve.

Remember if it clears the system has to cycle a few times and set ready. At least here in nj... Took my wife's car two weeks normal driving to set ready. The light comes back if it's a different problem... Like u fixed the sensor but it was another sensor or a bad catalytic converter. Good luck!

Clearing DTCs will also reset the I/M (Inspection/Maintenance) monitor causing the OBD2 system to report DTC P1000 until all of the I/M tests are completed (more about the OBD2 Drive Cycles here).

In many states having emissions testing this will be an automatic fail; however some states do allow for any single system to be failed/incomplete...
