Anti theft

Hey guys. I am new to the mechanic world and was working on my 2000 mustng gt, I am installing a push button starter, I kinda dove in heads first and took the ignition switch out ( where the key goes). Then realized I got to go to the ignition box under the dash. I didn't cut any wires before I put things back together without hooking the push starter up. Now it turns over and won't catch and then anti theft light blinks fast. I am figuring I tripped the anti theft but not sure how fix it? I was thinking tuner since i wanna get one anyway. Any suggestions?

Did you make sure and plug all your connectors back in? Have you tried a different key?

Its quite possible you broke the halo ring that sits around the ignition lock cylinder. That ring even the slightest crack on it wont let it start up. I had it happen on mine i broke my halo ring. Its roughly 78$ at the dealership. Its called the anti theft transponder

Even if you put the button in, the key will need to be in the ignition. The key also has a transponder. There is only way to get around this. Get a tune with pats off. It is the passive anti thief system.

Yes, the 2000 Mustang does have a PATS system. If PATS is not recognizing the key code, it disables the fuel pump. It allows the engine starter to spin the engine, but with no fuel pressure, it won't start.

Those button push start things are cool, but they do not eliminate the key/key fob; it still needs to be close to the ring thats located on the inside of the key ring. As 1996mustang has stated, there is a coiled type ring inside the area of were you insert the key. This ring "reads" the code transmitted by the key fob. range is only a couple inches at best, as the early system was designed to have the key inserted.

Some folks tape a key fob inside the steering column so that they only have to push the start button to start the car. Kinda dumb, as you loose any security, unless you buy a seperate alarm system. Pricy stuff to gain a start button.

I wasn't aware though that you could order a tune that disables the PATs system.

The first thing most tuners do when they tune a PATS car is turn PATS off. Disabling it will fix his problem but probably cost more money than just fixing whatever it was that he broke. Still, there will be other advantages from getting a good 93 octane tune in there.

Here is a BRB (Big Red Button) schematic I put together for a friend some years back that may be of interest.

As others have stated you will need to do something about the PATS...

BTW, all Mustangs from 1996 through at least 2010 have PATS, as follows

1996-1997 have PATS type A
1998 has PATS type B
1999-2004 have PATS type C

2005-2009 have PATS type E
2010 has PATS type C

The PATS for the 2005-2010 MYs uses a starter interrupt in addition to disabling the fuel pump.

Like bucko said all it does is disable the fuel pump. If any one needs the information this is how to diagnosis it. PATS for dummies translation I could not diagnose mine because I did not have 2 keys. I know how to add a key, but not with a pats dysfunction.
