Play in steering

Hey guys. Hoping someone can help me out. I just replaced my steering column in my 01 GT now I am getting about and inch play in my steering. Before I changed columns my steering was tight. What could be up with the column that would cause play in the steering? Thanks for your help.

What did you replace it with,Aftermarket, OEM? And where did you get the replacement shaft? And also why did you do the replacement?

Usually play in the steering is caused by the rag joints on the shaft having some play in them. They are supposed to be a little loose from the factory to decrease NVH. A stock mustang will have about an inch of play back and forth before the wheels will actually turn

My clock spring went out and a buddy of mine had a steering column laying around so I just put the steering column he gave me in my car. It just seems to have more play in it than my original one did.
