Timing chain slap?

Ok, so I am new to this car and the v8's in general. I was told that the manifold was really thin on our cars and you can hear everything... So I thought I'd come on here and ask.

I am hearing a bit of a "metally" sound when I slam the pedal in my car. It's REALLY bad when I do it in like 4th gear around 30 mph. It sorta sounds like a slapping timing chain would in my mind or a weird "crank" sound.. but maybe its just the injectors being loud? I tried to take a audio clip of it but my exhaust overbears it and that's really all you can hear. I am 100% it's in the engine bay. Honestly, it's a weird sound.

The only reason I would say it might not be the timing chain slapping is because when I rev it (with the hood popped up) it doesn't make the noise. It sounds like a good running beast of a v8. I've heard of it making the slap sound when you just rev it with the hood popped up and listening to it. It's mainly at low rpms when I gas it. Any ideas?

Manual, 03, with 117k miles.

I'm not sure. I sorta think so but then another part of me is like.. Nah it sounds more like a "crank" or metal-ish sound.

Sounds like pinging to me. Flooring it in 4th gear at 30 mph is putting a lot of load on the engine. What octane fuel are you using?

87. Street tune from bama. If it's my tensioner a going out the. Why can't I hear it when the car is still and I am revving the engine? I get my gf to rev it and I stick my head in the bay. Sounds great.

A tensioner should make noise at any rpm range, not just under heavy load. I would run a higher octane fuel on that tune and see if it goes away. If it does then contact Bama and get a good catalog of your car

Timing chain slap?

That's not true because I just went through a tensioner and it would be off and on. And is off an on because oil pressure build up inside the timing cover

Tensioner isn't bad like 15$ local part store should have one . It's replacing it is the bad part. Pulling entire front assembly off of the engine. Unbolt ions your valve covers. And first 4 bolts on the oil pan that holds the timing cover to the block. Should look like this when your done Click image for larger version

I had done a bottom end build on mine reason it's out of the car

You'll need a harmonic balancer to pull crank pulley. After replacing tensioner you'll have to put the motor back into time

How much is a shop gonna want for this? I literally don't have the time it mechanical skills to mess with it. When I get home it's dark. Leave at 7 in the morning. So yeah. Lol hopefully 3-500$?

It may.. But I only really notice it when it's in the Lower rpms and I "bog" the motor down by pressing the pedal in fast.

Also, is this something I need to get done this week? Or is it something that if I don't abuse the motor it will be fine for a month or so?

Well a shop may want more. Just because of what has to be done. They may do it in the car or may have to take the car out. I'd say 500-600 just to be safe. It's not the part that gets you but the time in labor they spend on it.

Also yes this is something that needs to address. Chain slap means there's unwanted slack in the chain. It can rub to much that it can mess your timing chain up, then you'll need a new one of those. The rub can cause metal shavings to get into the oil and if not picked up by the oil filter can cause a spun or main rod bearing with unwanted material in the bearings as the crank spins. Even may jump time if it already hasn't ( You'll notice lack of power and running rough )

In all it's not something I'd drive around on. At 100,000 miles if the car hast already had it done it would be good idea to replace it all with a timing kit. New chains, guards , and tensioners. If it's been slapping for a awhile they may need it.

Oh yeah what side does the sound come from. Left or right. Or is it both. You have two chains. One that controls the left side and one that controls the right. Easy way to tell is take a long screw driver and place at the top on each side of the timing cover. Put your ear to the top of the screw driver and listen for slag inside.

I can't tell, it only does it when I am driving at low rpms. It just sound like in the middle of the engine lol. Hard to tell without being in the car. It's been doing it for about 1k miles and been ok.. So idk. If I let a mechanic ride with me will he for sure know if it's the tensioner?

Timing chain slap?

Also, why didn't this happen to my v6? It had 150k on it no problems.. So far it has been a lot more reliable lol.

Also what's weird is I had a box in my trunk that was "timing components" and the dealer said that every box in ur trunk was something they fixed. So I'm not sure.

My car is making the exact same sound as the OP is describing on his car, but i can describe mine as sounding like little rocks or marbles are rattling around. It only does it between 1400-1750 rpms, mainly when im cruising in 4th gear around 30mph..The car has been doing this for almost a year but my mechanic says its nothing to worry about and that its my exhaust manifolds, since they have a small leak that i haven't fixed yet..what do you guys think?

If this could be confirmed I would be ecstatic. I am being reluctant to shell out 800$ for new tensioners

A tank of 91 is cheap and easy to do so why not try that first?

If the dealer installed new timing chains and tensioners and it is in fact slapping then I would take the car back to them and make them fix it.

Absolutely. I will be putting in 93 here very soon (I'm at a quarter tank) with the bama race tune.

Its a used car lot and didn't have a warranty. I tried contacting them about a p1450 CEL code but they basically ran me in circles and the salesman wouldn't contact me back.

Yeah if the dealer has had anything done with the timing on that car. I'd take it back and tell them ASAP. Timing is very touching and anything can m be messed up. If they replaced the chains and not tensioners that could be a problem.

I am not sure that's the problem, and they will probably just tell me to kiss off lol.

Can you make a video of the sound? I have to agree that it might be detonation. But hearing it may make it easier to identify

I will try again. My exhausts just drowns it out unfortunately.

---------- Post added at 05:13 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:12 PM ----------

Is detonation that common?

Normally on start up you'll hear a rattle and it may go away, if you take off a valve cover and you can see the timing chain around the cam gear if you can feel it lose that's your problem I did my set this summer pm if you have any questions

Nothing rattles. It runs good. Should it rattle on warm and cold start ups?

When it's really bad both, but normally cold because the tensions won't have oil pressure going through them

Just a small update... Heard it in first gear today when I was going from a stop. It seems to be consistent with pressing the gas at low rpms.
