1998 ford mustang gt 5 speed transmission problem

I drive a 1998 ford mustang gt 5 speed convertible and im having third gear Grinding problems. i was driving it and i downshifted fast to avoid hitting a car, well i ended up going into the ditch and bottoming out and it was in third gear. Now everytime i shift it into third gear(either upshift or downshift) it grinds but only if i shift fast. If you count to 3 then shift it into third gear it dont grind. People have told me shift linkage, some people have told me syncro, i just wanna get it fixed for my son to drive and i cant figure it out. I dont wanna have to get a rebuild kit if i dont need to

This is a VERY common problem. The only thing that you can try, before a rebuild, is to drain and refill the trans with Mobil 1 synthetic ATF or Pennzoil Syncromesh, and see if that helps.

Check your clutch adjustment and you could change the fluid and see if that helps but 96-98 transmissions are notorious for synchros going out. My 98 does the same thing into 2nd and its the synchro. I am replacing it with a 3650 next week. That's what happens when the transmission has paper blocker rings instead of carbon fiber that the 99-up ones got.

Just because I give you advice, doesn't mean I know more than you. Its just means I've done more stupid ****.
