Bad Steering Shaft?

I think I have a bad steering shaft. As I turn the wheel I hear a click click click coming from the u joint or by the firewall I can't tell exactly where.

It's definitely in the shaft somewhere around u joint on the firewall I'm just wondering do I replace my whole shaft or is there a bearing somewhere that is making that noise that I need to replace.

Any information or comments are appreciated.

I'm guessing that the whole shaft needs to be replaced if that is indeed the source of the noise. I don't think that there are any serviceable parts.
I would expect, though, that you would be able to feel the noise that you are hearing through the steering wheel.
Id get someone to sit in the car and turn the wheel while you stand outside and listen for the source of the noise.

Thanks ...no play, cant feel anything in the wheel. Feels like I can grab the knuckle on one side and pull...looks like there is the slightest movement in the u joint so im thinking knucle is starting to go bad.

Car has 99, 000 and has had some issues with dry rot on some of the rubber a d plastic parts from sitting out side.
