Maf problems ?

What are some symptoms of a bad maf air flow sensor other then check engine light? The car starts acting up like hesitation and stalling when hitting the throttle. If you Un plug the maf sensor it acts fine. Is it bad?

Did you use actual maf cleaner? And did you remove it from the housing? By removing the star bits on top? Click image for larger version
