What to look for in a 96-98 cobra

I have some money to spend on a car and am looking to upgrade from my wrecked GT.

Is that year cobra even worth it ? (96-98)

I have a rebuilt 8.8 with 4.10 on gt could I install that on a cobra?

This is for Dd with some street fun btw

The main differences between those and the "New Edge" is they have a little less horsepower and they don't have the independent rear suspension introduced in 99, so, yes, your 8.8 will bolt right up.

Do they have 28 or 31 spline axles?

Is it upgrading if I buy an older car?

I believe that they are 28 spline but there are people on here that know the specifics on those cars better than I so they will correct me if im wrong.
You have to answer the second question yourself. There are some pristine examples of all years of Mustangs so, I suppose, depending on your budget, you could probably find one with low enough miles to call "near new", but... It's still going to be a 16+ year old car.

They have 28 spline stock. The cobra is a 4v verses 2v also yes I would say it's an upgrade. But it's all in your eyes!

Hokai...

The 96-98 Cobra was the "B headed" 4V vs the newer "C headed" 4V that started in 1999 and culminated with the Terminator.

The B headed cars use a split port intake design with IMRCs to make up for the terrible low end this motor produces in stock trim. Most guys with them opt for 4.10s or even 4.30s to help out with this. As far as transmission and rear end, they are nearly identical to the GT. The Cobra T-45 uses a different crossmember setup than the GT and is about 2" further back but that really doesn't mean anything. Rear end is identical so yes you could swap in any 96-98 V8 rear and be fine. NOTE: if your rearend is from a 99-04 car it will be appx 1" wider but will still fit.

In a nutshell, the 96-98 Cobra is really just a Mustang GT with some cosmetics (cobra bumpers/hood/airbags), bigger brakes and a 4V. There are obviously a bunch of other small changes but overall that's it.

Is it worth it? If you can get one for a really good price yes it is worth it. They are WAY faster than the 96-98 GT and faster than the 99-04 GT as well. However, they are not worth the $12k-$18k prices ppl seem to want for them in really good shape. No way in hell. I would not pay more than $8k-$10k for one and $10k would be a garage kept, low mileage one unless its a Mystic in mint condition.

By 1" wider do you mean 1 inch on each side? Or all together? Will it look odd or awkward?

And I've been looking at craigslist and autotrader and have seen decent cobras for 8-9 both 96-98 and 99-01. But the new edge ones on there are butt ugly! Except a couple lol

Also random question..

4v n/a cobra or LTx corvette??

1" wider total. 1/2" wider per side.

As for Cobra vs C4 Vette... it depends. My father has a really nice 96 LT4 vette but it just looks way too... dunno... like a 60 yr old man should drive it. And that is the case lol.

Agreed on the Vette. You have to be a real badass to pull it off without looking like a grampa.
I imagine that the 1 inch wider rear end can only help the way the wheels fit the wheel wells.

Its always a crapshoot with a used car. If you know what you are looking at it really doesn't matter who is selling it.

Also don't rule out the 94/95 Cobra. I'd MUCH rather have that car than any other Cobra till the Terminator. The 94/95s got most of the 96-98 goodies (didn't get the Cobra hood or rear bumper but DID get a cool one off decklid/wing and got everything else) but kept the 5.0 pushrod engine and it was the GT40 variant. They usually dyno in the 230-240rwhp range bone *** stock and take REALLY well to bolt ons and a tune. They also have this thing called low end torque that is sadly lacking in all modulars that don't come from the factory with an Eaton product bolted to them.
