Smoked Tails

I used to have tint on my taillights that I bought off eBay for like 11 bucks but it recently flew off. I guess I got my money's worth for the year it lasted. I was wondering what you guys used for smoking your taillights? ie: AM Tint,VHT,eBay tint or any others

American muscle has tail light tint pre cut to go on your tails and they work really well they black them out and stay on it looks very professionally done and you can tell that is is vinyl.

Smoked Tails

I used VHT nightshade. It's easy, cheaper, and looks great. Plus you can pick the shade you want it (whether it be 2 coats or 5 coats.) Be careful though.. Cops can an will pull you over for having smoked tails. I have been pulled over several times for them.

Nightshade is 8-12$ (plus you'll have a lot left over for other stuff) vs 30$ at AM.. Plus you can get the nightshade today. Up to you though.

I definitely recommend the AM tint. It was easy to install and holds up great. Click image for larger version

I had a friend who used VHT and it looked good and then cracked. And isn't it hard to get off?

He didn't prep and do it right then. I had mine for years and it SLIGHTLY faded, that's it.

I would opt for either the tail light vinyl strips or tinted tails from AM.

VHT is alright imo but requires prep, sanding, a few coats and a couple coats of clear to look right and not like sh*t.

I've installed the vinyl strips on my v6 tails which are now on the Mach 1 and they look almost identical to the tinted set of tails I have on the v6.

AM Set of Tinted Tails

AM Vinyl Strips

I used vht and it looks like crap. Yes I cleaned sanded buffed and cleared but they still ugly plus one's darker than the other. Go with vinyl tint in my opinion

Are the vinyl strips from AM pre cut?

Yes they are pre-cut individual strips that you apply one at a time. If you take your time, clean the surfaces thoroughly and use a hairdryer they adhere and form to the contour of the lights real well.

Might be going this route with the strips then because the VHT looks horrid even after redoing 3 times.

Another nice thing about the vinyl strips is that you an still see the reverse lights during the day and if you don't want that portion tinted at all you can simply cut that section out.

Corvette has VHT tails and the Mustang has Vinyl from AM. Both look good, the VHT you have to worry about dripping and it fading if you don't polish and clear coat it, the vinyl looks pretty good.

What'd you use to make the corvettes so shiny?

A glossy clear coat is all it takes. VHT looks legit if you know how to do it, and it's cheaper.

I agree if done correctly it doesn't look bad, but you have to put some effort into it, not just spray some coats on and call it a day.

My biggest complaint about VHT sprayed lights are when people make them soo fricken dark. I wouldn't go any darker than you did on your Bullitt, maybe even a coat or two less.

Meguiars Scratch X 2.0 on a shop towel and rubbed it in like a regular polish, also a bit of wetsanding. Never clear coated them, but the Corvette barely gets driven once a week (if that) so it isn't exposed to the sun much. The VHT that was on the Mustang faded, which is why i took it off and put Vinyl. If the car sees a lot of driving then clear coat them or get vinyl.

Oh, must have been the darker setting in the garage that made them appear darker.

Your tails with VHT look decent, as said if done correctly they can look good.

I guess I'm just a lazy bastard and prefer vinyls or complete pre-done assemblies.

Yea if I had to do it again and pick, I would go with the vinyl again. And yea it was darker in the garage... Plus the nicer pic has an Instagram edit on it lol

I want the matte look on mine since I am going to matte the decklid and want it to blend well with tail lights. Plan on using Smoke plastidip this weekend so I will let you know how it goes and post some pics

I recently installed the smoked tail lights and sequentials from raxiom on mine. They're definitely darker, but not much.

Here's a pic of my *** end with the smoked lights as a reference. Also, you said about doing the decklid. I did mine with the pre-made vinyl from AM, very happy with it.
