Driveshaft play

Got an oil change today and decided to check the driveshaft because when I shift (1,2,3,4, or 5) I get a thump sound from the rear. It has play in it. Could be a bad U-Joint? Or bolts not tighten up?

Yank on the u joint left and right and up and down. Yeah if there is play the U joint is bad. Luckily, those are easy to replace and not very expensive.

If there is no IRS involved yes. IIRC the rear U-joint is different on a IRS equipped car. But I'm not 100% on that so I'd do some extra research if you have IRS.

If they GT driveshaft was reused and a Cobra flange was put on it then you'll need a hybrid u-joint, I can't remember the size off the top of my head though. If the GT driveshaft was used and they installed a GT pinion flange on the differential then you will be fine with a normal GT u-joint

I think the hybrid U joint is like a 1310/1330 but again, not 100%.

That's what I was thinking, but I just checked and it's a 1330/1350

Well then there you go. Now that I think about it I think it is the T-56 27 spline yoke that is a 1310/1330. Blah.

You can't diagnose a bad u joint by looking at it.

It's almost guaranteed to be a GT driveshaft unless you have a 6 speed trans
