Will the auto transmission from a 2004 mustang gt fit on a 98?

How many parts are interchangeable

The only issue will be the speedometer on the 04 is different than the 98. Scottydoesntknow would be the go to guy on this one. Shoot him a pm.

I just did this swap. You need:

-Stiffler's crossmember for 94-98 GT with t45/3650 (stock crossmember will not fit)
-OSS sensor
-Dallas Speedcal (converts OSS to VSS)
-3650 Shifter (different from T45)
-79-95 style trans mount. I recommend the OEM rubber one.
-3.2 quarts of pennzoil synchromesh

I did the swap mainly because you can get a brand new 3650 directly to your door with all the TSBs done for $1060 from ebay. I would NOT recommend buying a used one.

Install is the same as for the T-45 except you have to unhook the air intake from the motor and put a jack on the front of the oil pan and jack it ALL the way up until the back of the motor touches the firewall. If you don't do this, the 3650 will not clear going in as it is a little fatter than the T-45.

It's a 4r75w not a 5 speed. Both donor car and receiver car are automatics

Then its a direct bolt in except for:

1- You will have to change a setting in your 98 computer for the OSS pulse wheel. The 96-03 4R70w transmissions use a 6 pulse OSS wheel the 4R75w uses a 24 count. You must do this or your car will not shift properly and there is no way around it.

2- You will need to figure out your speedometer. VSS works differently than OSS, your computer is expecting 8000 pulses per minute from an 8 tooth drive gear. Since you are going OSS and a 24 pulse OSS wheel you will have to use a combination of a speedcal and change the PPM setting in your computer via a tuner unless you are staying 3.31 rear gears or under. If that is the case you can just use a speedcal to convert the OSS signal to VSS. OR, you can have a shop switch your current tailshaft and housing to the new trans and run the VSS as is.

Even if this all sounds like a PITA, the 4R75w is a MUCH better transmission than the 4R70w it is replacing. Internal upgrades make it akin to a "built" trans from the factory and ppl routinely put 600+rwhp through them with no issues at all.

edit: Also, while it is out, now is the time to upgrade the stock converter. The stock converter sucks and upgrading to a good aftermarket unit will make it feel like a whole new car.
