Anyone know what the hell this noise is?

My car is making this metallic scraping noise on cold starts. It only happens if the car has been sitting for 6+ hours. It has been happening off and on for a while but it's gotten worse recently. It used to only happen in cold weather but now it's happening all the time...It only lasts for 1-2 seconds right when the car starts.

Anyone know this noise?

I couldn't get the YT to play but if it's a grinding noise that occurs right after you release the the key from the "start" to the "on" position, it is likely the starter gear isn't releasing from the ring gear on the flywheel/flexplate right away, once the engine starts.

That sounds about right actually. As soon as the car fires up, it makes the metal grinding/scrape noise. Does that mean the starter is going bad?

Maybe or it could be a bad idle or tensioner pulley. You can take the belt off and spin each pulley and see if any one pages noise.

Do what Mfore said also, unless you have it narrowed down to the starter.
It might be that the starter mounting bolts are coming loose, a bad starter, a bad starter solenoid, or, possibly, the ring gear on the flywheel is bad.

I'll check those out. The noise sounds like its coming from the back of the engine so at first i thought it was an internal engine problem or something with the clutch.

When the car is warm there is also this quiet rattle that goes away when I press in the clutch at idle. I wonder if its related to the cold start noise?

What you just described is the throw out bearing. They all seem to do that eventually.

I don't think its the throw out bearing, I had a bad throw out bearing on the stock clutch set up before I got a centerforce put in about 10,000 miles ago. That bad TOB was more of a chirp or squeak. The sound now is more of metallic rattle sound. It could be something different, I just maybe thought that it could be related..

Sounds like a bearing from an idler or wp or tensioner. Simply take the belt off and start it up. Noise gone? Figure out wich bearing and replace as needed
