Safe to buy

Is it safe to buy an 2003 automatic v8 mustang with 140k Miles on it?? I hear that automatic trannies usually go out around 150k. Thanks for feedback!

You are asking a question we can not honestly answer. There are too many variables. Is the car a one owner? Does the car have maintenance records? Was the tranny fluid and filter changed, Was it well taken care of? These are indicators I look at when buying a car, especially if it has over 100k in miles. Do a complete check over and walk around, under and over. If everything looks good, and no signs of leaks, then you should be OK. Then you can go and change out all the fluids to include rear diff. Listen to all parts moving while running, and during test drive.

Get it if you like it

Just drive it before you buy it and if the transmission feels OK just go to a "FORD DEALER" and have the transmission completely flushed and a new filter installed for about $150.00 to $175.00
Stay away from the jiffy lube thieves or places that say they can do a complete flush but don't.
I would also get a dealer or trusted mechanic to go over the car before buying it.
If they say it is a go, then do it.
Then get the cooling system flushed
The brake fluid flushed ( Check the pads)
Change the oil & filter
Check the air filter
Check the tires for cracks and air pressure
replace the shocks if you need to.
140,000 miles is not really a bad thing on these new cars if they were maintained properly.

As said, all about maintenance. If someone dogged on it, it could explode at any moment. If it was taken care of, the 4.6 will happily go over 200k... Plenty of members engines have died around 120-140... Allensragtop has 211k ATM. Just buyer beware. Take it to a mechanic

I have an '04 GT automatic with 185k and no problems. As everyone else said... just make sure to test drive it first and then make sure you know what you wanna pay.

I bought my old 98 gt with 178K miles. Minor problems but ran like a champ. Sold it at 194k and still going strong.
