Bullitt will be sitting for a while

So on my way home my fan stopped working. Didn't notice at first since I was on the highway with plenty of airflow. Within minutes of getting off the highway I was at a light and started to see steam just start coming from the hood.

And the sucky part is that I am at home only for this weekend and don't have time at all to fix it. So looks like I'm bringing the truck back to school.

Bright side another Mustang guy helped me push it to the side (went to high school with his girlfriend) and asked about the car.

Well that SUCKS!!!

Luckily, these engines are fairly tough.
About a year or so ago, the plastic tee on the heater hose broke on my car and it quickly pumped out the coolant to below the level of the water pump. It was in the middle of the night and I was in the middle of NOWHERE... And no cell phone service!
I was able to find the problem and repair it but I had no water. I sat there for two hours and let the engine cool completely off. I was too lazy to walk the 5 miles to the nearest gas station so I just drove the car and then waited till the engine cooled again to put water in it and continued on my way. Fortunately, there was no damage.

Fuse blew. I spun the fan by hand and it felt fine. So I'm swapping the fuse, and I guess I'll see if that one blows.

Did it work? It's amazing you can get those fuse easily at the parts store. Good to know.

Fan started working but sounded really weird and then cut. Like something was tapping it, or a bearing or something. Got a video but phone won't let me upload right now.

Your fan is probably toasted.
Did it pop the fuse again?

Fuse is still good. But the fan quit. It worked for a whole 15 seconds before it quit.

Just going to replace the fan.....

Think this will do the job? I don't see the need for some super fancy one.

Good to here you got it pretty much resolved.

I was on my way to a subway for lunch one day in my 97 Mark VIII. Parked right in front of the Subway window. Got out and went inside to order and go. Someone came running in and asked who owned the Mark VIII, when I turned around I saw the flames and ran outside, popped the trunk and got my fire extinguisher (always carry one in trunk) and popped the hood. Sprayed the fire out, and turned out to be the fan seized and caught fire. Turned out the motor seized, and the bearing housing melted from the heat and the fan dropped down into the plastic shroud. Never heard a thing or smelt nothing up to that point. Replaced the fan, harness, plastic radiator top plates, and repainted the hood. Now I check my fans all the time when I service my cars. If I had not had the extinguisher the car would of kept burning.

I'll have to check that out someday!

Do you know what I think of when I hear the name Patrick Swayze? That Trailer Park Boys episode where Bubbles steals Patrick Swayze's model train and then him and Ricky and Julian used it to smuggle dope into the states. Lol. They were selling it to that dude from the metal band "Skid Row"... Sebastian Bach.

Classic!!!
Haha
Patrick Swayze wasn't even in the episode or had anything to do with it!

My fan died last year. Same symptoms as you. Local parts place had it in stock. Less than $100.00. And easy replace.

For another $30 I can get the entire assembly. Replacing just the motor did cross my mind. But I figured might as well do the whole thing just for ease of mind since it's not that much more.

Mine was 4 Seasons I think. Looked exactly like the OEM. I've given up on much of the OEM parts with some exceptions, lik COP. Just got Motorcraft FI hose...Made in China right on part. In most cases its the same stuff only Ford charges 50 percent more.

That is exactly what I would of done. While it needs fixong, might as while do it all while you are at it, and especially since it is only a couple of dollars more.

Ford (Motorcraft) manufactures very few of the thousands of parts necessary to build a modern vehicle.
They do design and put out specific requirements that outside vendors must either manufacture their parts to or have parts that already meet with Ford's requirements.
That is what you are paying for.
It is in no way a guarantee that you are receiving the best quality part but it does increase your odds that the part will work correctly right out of the box.
If you research who Ford sourced the part from, you can often save a few dollars by purchasing the part from the same manufacturer only in their non-Motorcraft brand packaging.

What's missing though is quality control. One of the reasons China, India etc can manufacture goods for less money is the methods they use for QC. The basic philosophy is that if the line is set up to spec, the employees trained and the pilot runs produce the proper item with the proper specs they should be able to continue "forever" doing the same. Of course they spot check, but it's nothing like what happens say in German manufacturing or the old USA manufacturing. This is why you get those dead out of the box IAC from Autozone. The other reason is they swap them for their friends.

Couple that with a lag time between the time faulty or out of spec items are being produced and the time they get to the consumer (Ford) who discovers this, the market can be flooded with out of spec items. The distance plays a big role in this. The USA has lost control of it's manufacturing IMHO and it will come back to bite us, the consumer.

Still I agree with you that you stand a better chance of getting a quality, in spec part buying from OEM. This is especially true with electrical items like TPS, FRP, COP, IAC and so forth.

For other items, the aftermarket has improved on the Ford OEM and the unit is actually better. Suspension is one area.
