New member with need for advice

Hi guys just picked up a 2000 gt with 151,000kms on it. Original lady owner and never winter driven. Just wondering what weight and type of oil would be best for this car considering mileage and age. Thanks

Also with that many miles you might want to consider a full synthetic

No noo nooooo do not use rotella or a full synthetic ( unless thats whats been used the whole time for that car) and the specs for the 4.6 is 5w20 and usually 6 qt of oil, for me i use 5w20 synthetic blend high milage oil from castrol ( my personal pref as ive seen 300k motors with castrol and the motors where still looking like new on inside) no full synthetic oil is needed or required for this motor only benifet u get is longer miles in-between oil changes but ive been recommended against it unless its been used from day 1 of the vehicle, a high milage oil has additives to help seals and bearings, ive also seen motors come apart with the wrong weight oil used and there was alittle bit of buildup on the piston rings and behind them and the oil rings where beginning to stick. Theres a reason the manufacturer recommends a certain weight and type and i suggest sticking with it

Excellent thanks guys. I will change it this weekend. It's been sitting in a barn for 4 years so it could use some fresh oil ( and every other fluid )

5w-20 is recommended in America

5w-30 is recommended in Australia

Take your pick.

Contrary to popular belief switching to full synthetic at anytime is fine for the car. If you develop leaks they were there to begin with, the conventional oil was just masking it.

Synthetic oil also has better protection for engines at high rpms, but since these motors only rev to ~6000 you can get away with either one. Most of us who use full synthetic aren't drag racers and don't "need" it. We just like the extra protection and the extended oil change schedule that it offers.

I personally use a 5w-30 full synthetic (high mileage doesn't hurt) in the summer months, and a 5w-20 full synthetic in the winter months.
