There can be white colored smoke with a kind of Sweet smell from the coolant. It's a sign of a bad head gasket. How hot did the car get? Were you able to shut it down as soon as it heated up?

Did the oil have any whitish froth? Almost like a little bit of a film when you checked it?

Any coolant leaking? Like under the intake manifold? Or have you been having to add coolant/water at all?

The radiator could be gunked up from just needing to be flushed.

Could do a pressure test to see? Also if the motor overheated there could be different issues like warped or cracked cylinders? That would cause it not to want to start. I'm sure others will chime in with some helpful info Also.

Can do a block test. Basically is like a big dropper and you insert it into the radiator fill hole and inject a blue solution, if it turns a certain color, I believe yellow then It's most likely a blown head gasket. I think you can buy them at autoparts stores.

97 mustang gt hot

After sitting overnight is the car hard to start in the morning? After driving the car on a normal trip take the oil cap off and see if there is a milky ring around the cap. Should be yellowish in color.

Running hot, water in oil, and oil in water are the tell-tale signs of a blown head gasket.

I've always had luck with a product called blue devil head gasket sealer. Put 70k miles on a car with this stuff and it's still driving fine to this day. If nothing else you can use this product to buy yourself some time to...ya know... Get rid of the car ...

CBIRD, it won't crank. I drained all the water because there was gunky stuff in the radiator. It still won't crank.

From the sounds of this, it could be bad if it won't turn over now. If that is the case it must have got pretty hot when it overheated. No signs of coolant loss before this?

I would Maybe take it to a reliable Shop and have them take a look to see if they can give you some info.

If it wont crank at all are u sure u even got power? It might be a coincidence that u lost power when all this happened or u unhooked something when u worked on the car, now if when u try to crank it and it makes a "clunk" kind of sound the motor could be locked up but if not i would retrace my steps and see if u forgot to hook something up or the battery connection got loose

Well when u hit the key what is it doing? Like is it making a noise ? Put a socket on the crank pulley bolt and see if u can turn the motor over by hand if it moves make sure it will spin atleast 2 full revolutions if it does then u have a starter/power issue, if it wont then take a 1/2 ratchet and release the tensioner/belt and try again if it still wont then ur motor is locked up (which for me id use that as a excuse to put me in a pi motor)

There wont be no smoke if it wont run , if the starter is turning the motor over decently and it isnt starting and sounds weak then id be willing to bet that u blew a head gasket or warped a head or both, in any case id still get a jy pi motor and throw in there and call it a day that away u came out on top anyway, here i bought my jy motor for $100 it came complete from intake to oil pan and i paid another 100 for them to pull it because it was soo hot outside that it was worth it to me to not stand out there pulling it lol

Ok. I'll try that. Yesterday it ran for over an hour and there was water and smoke coming out but then it stopped. When I turned it off it would not come back on again.

Sounds more and more like a blown head gasket with some internal damage as well to me. I know That's not what anyone wants but if it is take this opportunity to get the PI motor. You can find them everywhere as they were used in several model Ford cars. How many miles does your motor have currently? Just curious.
