Yes heads and cams will definitely help you. You just have to weigh out the price of the heads/cam/tune vs a Nice vortech sc setup and tune. You may be surprised that the difference isn't that much.

An NA cam generally isn't good for FI.

As far as keeping up with a Z28 ... if it's stock, you might be able to run with them or beat them with a full bolt on / cammed 4.6. However, once the Fbody owner starts modding his car, it's game over for any NA 4.6.

If this Z28 has a cam, then you should just buy a new car.

I peiced together a v2 vortech kit for 1800 and ill be another 350 in it for a dyno tune u cant get heads/cams for that price and a full bolton ported head/cam combo might make 300-350 to the wheels where as a vortech kit will make around 370-400 on a stock gt then if u go adding heads and cams and full boltons u could easily be in the 500 or more range then u can always up the boost for even more, but 450 to the wheels ur on a time clock of the motor going kaboom! But some forged rods/pistons will help that it all depends on what ur after but with boost u can always grow, theres people with 700 whp with a vortech kit and it still being a daily driver but they also have a bunch of $ into it to but 500 whp can easily be obtained with a basic vortech kit/ forged rods & pistons... but getting that power to the ground is another fun project i wouldnt go too much without putting some suspension/tires under the car cuz 500 whp wont help u if u just blow the tires away
