MAF Sensor Question

I have searched the forum to no avail regarding this question. So here goes. I have been reading/researching about mass air flow sensors and how to tell if they are bad. There have been several bits of info that say you can unplug the maf and the engine should die, and if it doesn't, you have a bad sensor. Is this true with my 98 'vert?

A faulty MAF will typically trigger a trouble code but not always. If you haven't checked for any pending codes, you may want to do so, as there can be a code with no CEL.

A basic test for the MAF is to disconnect it with the engine turned off and then start the engine. If the MAF is faulty, it will typically run better with the MAF disconnected because the PCM can do a better job when it is not receiving incorrect air flow information.
