At the tire shop they said the widest I could go was 255, is that true?

275's all around on my 17x9 wheels. Some larger sizes might not look as good, but they'll still fit. They start to look bulgy after 275 depending on the maker.

The tire shop is correct!
The widest tire that I would use on an 8 inch rim is a 255.

The stock Bullitts are 17×8.

You can run a 275 on an 8 inch rim... Doesn't mean you should, it will tramaline and handle like ***. 255/45/17 is actually a stock size for the sn95 btw, came on 94/95 cobras. For a 10 inch wide rim... All depends on the brand of tire. I had a nitto 315 wide tire out back on my 98 and I replaced them with bfg 275s that were damn near as wide.

Like stated before the stock size wheels are 17x8". I just ordered a set of 4 17x9" dished Cobra wheels for my GT. Will be wrapping them in the stock 245/45ZR17 tires that are on the car now, and putting a set of stock size tires on the Bullitt wheels.

245 should fit ok but if you don't like a totally flush look watch out. Hopefully they aren't nittos or sumis...

17x8 is OEM size for GT's, Mach's, and the Bullitts. 17x10 is bigger than 17x9, so yeah you can go bigger. I'm not sure what the max is for 10" wide wheels. At least 305's anyways.

I had a 275 Faulken tire on my 17x8 and they fit with quite some bulg, but I wouldn't do it again. The tire only wore down like 2/3 of the tread. I learned the hard way and realized I wasted money on some tire I didn't use at all and didn't need. Stick with specs.

255 max for 17x8,
275 max for 17x9,
305 max for 17x10,
315 max for 17x10.5

Of course different brands vary in sizes.

That's a good generic baseline but like you said, different brands run different sizes even with the same specs... which is stupid and it should be industry standardized. As I mentioned before, I had a BFG 275 that might as well have been a Nitto 300/305 wide as it was just a touch narrower than the Nitto 315s it replaced.

The way I got it right was to just hit up tirerack and go by the actual specs on each tire which I found pretty accurate surprisingly. Not the tire size spec, the actual width/height in inches on the charts they provide. Like for that BFG, I found that a 235 BFG was 9.1" wide and was the right height I wanted so I jumped on that one for an 8" wide wheel against what a LOT of ppl were telling me on the internets. Same deal with the 275s, it was like 11.4" wide spec on tirerack so I went with it on the 18x10s although 275s are known to fit ok on a 10" wide rim for most brands.

Biggest thing to remember is that rim width is measured not from the outer lip to outer lip, but the inner lip to inner lip. So an 8" wide rim is going to be closer to 9" total which is why the 235 I ordered fit just perfectly on the AM 18x8 Bullitt replicas I had up front on that 98.

Nice thanks for the info

What would be the minimum size for 17x10.5 would it be 275 or 305?

Even the biggest 275s are a little narrow for a 10.5" rim. 295 is going to be the narrowest you want to go for the 10.5" rim. Sumi makes a cheap 315/35/17 that fits well on a 17x10.5" rim and since the Sumis run narrow they don't bulge too much or create any rubbing issues.

As stated multiple times in this thread. The 255's will be fine on the stock 17x8 bullitts.
I am currently running 245s on front and 275s on the rear on a 17x9 rim.
