When do I have to tune??

At what point do I have buy a tuner? I have a bbk cai in and in a copule of weeks I am having the mid pipe done and changing the mufflers from super 44's to super 10's on my flowmaster catback. At some point I am changing the throttle/plenum this summer, but I am not sure if I am going with the bbk unit or just a trickflow upper plenum. Any info is appreciated.

Get the TFS setup. This exact one for a PI mustang

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/tf.../model/mustang

You buy a tuner whenever. If you get a canned tuner (Steeda/Bama) you can get it retuned for free as many times as you want but be aware that they are canned tunes. If you go with a datalogger you generally get 2-3 free re-tunes and then $20 a pop but they are actual tunes where you send them datalogs and they custom burn you something. Its really up to you.

The muffler change will not do anything performance wise btw, just sound, there would be no need for a retune just for that...

Scotty - who are some dataloggers? Just curious because I've used Bama and most recently MPT and neither have asked for any logs.

MPT should have. That's weird. AED/Lund/VMP all datalog but they're mostly Coyotes...

Yeah, I've even had 3 revisions of the tune because I really didn't like it and they still never asked for a data log (MPT).

I'd specifically ask to get that done then. Dunno. I just got really turned off by Steeda/Bama when they both told me they couldn't tune my 98 PI swapped car even though it was a full 99 PI engine like... sorry you're not getting my business if you are that incompetent.

I guess I'll ask them. I did ask them to take a look at the tune that came on the car when I bought it (don't know who did it), but they declined. So, I'm using that one. Heard nothing but good things about MPT, but the tunes that I have are just kinda blah.

I wouldn't tune unless you have significant mods. Exhaust and throttle body is kinda no big deal

A PI car will see noticeable gains with a good tune with just basic mods.

PI=Power Improved. What happened in 1999 when people *****ed to high heaven (rightfully so) about how terrible the 96-98 GT (NPI=Non Power Improved) cars were. If you have a 3V, it does not apply to you.

How much of a hp improvement are we taking with the pi? And was it just heads and intake?

Heads, intake and cams. Ford rated it at 45hp improvement. Aftermarket has since figured out its mostly the cams/intake. The NPI heads themselves are actually not that bad. Its still a good idea to upgrade any 96-98 car as one of the, if not THE very first thing one does.
