New guy here with preloaded tunes question

Hello all!

I've got an 03 GT that I've had for almost a year (359 days) and really enjoy the car. So far, I've added cold air intake, o/r h-pipe, and Magnaflow exhaust. I love how it runs and sounds, but would like to build on what I have.

So for awhile, I've been researching tuners and canned tunes/dyno'd tunes. I'm pretty set on the SCT X4 and had a few questions about it. For $400, it can be bought from Latemodel Restoration or American Muscle (with tunes for life). Of course, the one shop I've talked to wanted the same cost for the tuner, plus sales tax, plus dyno and tune.

I've been searching eBay as well. For around $300 I could buy the X4, and eventually go the dyno route and use the preloaded tune in the mean time. What's everyone's opinion on the tunes that come on the tuner? My dad had the old SCT model tuner with his 06 GT for awhile and it did wake things up.

My goals: I'd like to add more power/seat of the pants feel, but only when I want it. 99.9% of the time, I am possibly the most conservative Mustang driver out there. Right now it is my daily driver, so fuel economy is important to me. And I'd like to get rid of that pesky service engine light I've had since installing the o/r h-pipe.

Thanks!

Make sure used tuner is unlocked or your gonna pay 100-150 to get it unlocked from company that manufactured the tuner. Just make sure the seller set everything on their car back to stock with the tuner and you'll be okay, I used to work at a pawn shop and we actually took them but when people bought them they couldn't use it... SMH... So people do steal them and try to sell them. Just fyi

I've read some reviews around here about MPT tunes and that sounds like it's the way to go!

On any 7015 SCT X4, is it the same tuner for a gas car and a diesel pickup? Just want to make sure I don't buy the wrong one and be stuck.

I paid $200 for what might as well have been a brand new X3. No need for a X4 if all you are going to do is flash tunes and pull codes. Let other ppl pay $$$$$$ for the new ones.

Just need to make sure a used tuner is unlocked and unmarried which you can have the seller take pics of and verify. Not to mention anyone selling one will know to do this and if not then don't buy.

Check out "Tuning By James" (google it) and shoot him an email. He's currently busy as hell and may take a few days to respond but he's always got back to me and has been really helpful and will do very good remote tunes and you can use the X3. His prices are also really good.

I'm sure I'd like the X4 a lot better as well. I also like the $200 worth of extra stuff I got for the car by buying used lol.

And speak of the devil, UPS just showed up with said $200 of extra stuffs.

PowerAdderSolutions slot MAF kit good for 650 hp in a 3" tube. More in a larger tube. These are the optimal MAFs to use and pretty much required nowadays on blown apps. If you want to do it right anyway.

Its what you have to upgrade to if you are boosted and serious about doing it correctly. Slot MAF is what Ford went to in 05+ and they are much more accurate, much easier to tune and the IAT is built in. This one is a meter that I will never ever have to upgrade as long as I have the car.

Anyway, getting back on topic for the OP... Just illustrating that if you buy used you can get moar stuffs lol.

As long as it doesn't fall through, I'm buying a used X4 for $240.

Make DAMN sure it is unmarried AND unlocked. If not, do not buy. If the guy tries to tell you it is without taking a pic, don't buy. That price is a little low which just raises the red flag somewhat.

I basically built an entire 5.0 and driveline once on all used parts. VERY few things new. I think I bought new pistons and gaskets and some ARP harware and that's it lol.

It's unmarried and he's sending a picture tonight.

I don't think it's too cheap, I found two places on eBay with buy-it-now or best offers at $305 for brand new.

I bought my Magnaflow exhaust and off road H-pipe for $150 used. Guy only took it off because he's got an awesome wife who got him a Borla system for Christmas. I love bargains 👍🏻

Ok so I got the tuner, updated it, and got it installed. Very happy with it.

The one thing I'd like to change: get back to or closer to the factory shifting. 1-2 is HARD even when babying it. Is that something I can adjust?

I selected the 87 octane tune and turned off my rear O2 sensors. I looked for and did not find the economy tune, which is what I hoped for.
