Mod spending spree !

He guys! Just throwing this out there cause I love your input. I have an 02 mustang gt with magnaflow exhaust, xpipe, shorty tuned headers, and intake. I have a 1500 dollar budget to spend on parts. This car is going to be a daily driver, with the occasional track day. I personally am thinking of getting a tuner, and sinking the rest into suspension mods. What would you buy?

Well $1500 is not going to get you to "full bolt ons".

Gears should be the first thing (4.10s)

Then Subframes (Steeda or if you need ground clearance then Spintech)

Shifter (MGW)

Tuner (Recommend MPT)

That will be right in the $1500-$2k range. Then you'll need to worry about the rest of the suspension. No real need for coilovers unless you want the adjustability. If you are just going to do a basic suspension then something budget like KYB shocks and SR springs with Max Motorsports LCAs is good and won't break the bank.

I know that's over budget but you don't have to do it all at once.

What sort of "track day" are you referring to?
Road course or drag strip?

With 1500.. you can get some good bang for the buck mods ..

If you would like to get some suspension to look better , and handle better .. I'd suggest ..

Full length subframe connectors ..
SVE from latemodel are pretty good for the money
( Have them professionally welded in )

Some Coil springs. .
( H&R super sports Perfer )
Wouldn't hurt to add some Struts & shocks
( Tokico HP Perfer )

Lower control arms
( UPR , Maximum motorsports )

4:10 Gears
( Ford racing )

Short shifter
( Steeda , MGW )

Automatic
( " J-Mod " )

Buy a used unmarried SCT Tuner XP+
( Get a email tune from whoever you choose )

That would be my opinion ..
Plenum and throttle body aren't worth the money for the gains ..
I wouldn't bother unless you find a cheap deal on them ..
Manifolds are a waste unless you are doing a power adder soon ..
Camshafts would be ideal as well .. some Comp cams 262 would be good drop in cams without having to add springs / etc.

Anderson makes awesome cams from what I hear as well..

Good suggestions! I personally was thinking, strut tower brace, full length SF connectors, x4 bama tuner, lowering springs, caster camber plates, and sway bars. Or should I try and include the control arms as well? I'll be doing highway driving as part of my daily routine so 4.10s are probably out if the question... Maybe 373? I should have specified, the car will be used for both autocross and the drag strip in my spare time, so a balanced car is the goal. Spray was a thought just wanted to have everything else sorted out before I attempted anything like that. Just trying to prepare my gt for whatever I choose to throw at it !

Oh and I was a little nervous about installing a shifter. Just rebuild the trans and I don't like the idea of going near it... Lol but I should probably sometime soon.

The shifter literally is a 15 minute mod. If you can use a ratchet and aren't retarded you can do a shifter. I personally would not drive one of these cars with a stock shifter if I could help it.

As for 4.10s... you have an 02 so you have a .62 overdrive which is the extra deep one.

Use this calculator here

Engine RPM Calculator

Use the one at the bottom of the page. Stock tire diameter for these cars is 25.7", I recommend going a little bigger than that to 26-26.5" and run 4.10s and call it good. At 70mph you'll only be doing 2350 RPM even with a stock tire size. Not a big deal, don't fear the gear.

Gears, shifter and subframes should be first, then lower control arms, then the rest of the suspension and a tuner. Strut tower brace and sway bars and all that stuff can wait till later TBTH.

Edit: Also I see you have wawa in your name. You from the PA/NJ/DE area?

If you ever decide that you want to autocross your car, in a class, competitively, there are rules, dealing with the modifications that are, and are not allowed. Things like gear choices, and even welded sub frame connectors, can get you bumped up into classes where you will be competing against some SERIOUS cars.
Just something to keep in mind while choosing your modifications.

If your car has 100k+ miles on it, you might want to consider using some of your "mod money" to go through and freshen up all of the bushings in the front end of your car. And any other parts that may be worn, like the ball joints and tie rod ends.
I'd leave your current sway bars for now and just replace the sway bar bushings.
If you want to do the springs, do a little research on spring rates and such. Some of the lowering kits are more cosmetically oriented rather than performance oriented.
All of that, and a fresh set of shocks/struts, should really help tighten up the suspension.
Since this car is intended to serve "double duty", I would go ahead and do the welded sub frame connectors and lower control arms.
And definitely a tuner! If there is anything left of your budget.

Also throwing this in there.

A car set up to be good at handling and good at drag will be great at neither.

Your shocks and struts are junk. Replace them. Full length sub frames welded too. Eibach pro springs whule doing the rest. Set of 4.10 gears. Thats 1500 if u install the springs and shocks. Dont attempt gear swap yourself. Suspension/frame then go fast.

Gear swaps are not exactly hard but if someone is a beginner and not a mechanic on the side or for their actual job... yeah leave it to the pros. It should only take a good shop a few hours to do gears btw so if someone says $600... that had better be with all parts and fluids and labor and even that is steep.

Cincy speed does gear installs for 350 + parts but they almost always let u hop on the dyno after they work on ur car just for being a good customer so thats like a free 50 bucks lol. Not like gears will help that way

$350 plus a dyno pull is not bad at $100/hr and them taking their time and making sure they do it right.

Love the ideas! Yeah in no way am I ever going to be a serious competition in autocross, or at the drags, especially while keeping it a dd. I just enjoy improving my car. My car has 60xxx miles so she's pretty fresh for an 02! Warming up to the gear and shifter ideas. Defiantly going for the tuner and the subframe connectors first however. And nope not from those areas! From all the way up in manitoba, Canada !
