Are you auto or maunal trans? Auto go with 410s, j mod, and a tune, you will feel a huge difference in acceleration, and much firmer shifts. You will lose some top end mph, but you can only go so fast anyway. On a 1/4 mile drag you would be fine with this. Some will say 373 but the step up t0 410s isnt that big to me anyway at that point. If manual id go with the 410s as well, and a tune will be needed to correct your speedo on either. Also you have to factor in city, and highway driving whatever you do the most of? Highway you will lose a couple mpgs with the 410s, but gain some city, of highway is a concern go with the 373s. Even factoring mpgs i would go 410. I did 410s on my manual and it made a big difference in seat of the pants feel. Do your research though and determine what you want from the car and then decide. Go with a Ford Racing gear kit. I think its about 260 with most everything needed from AM. JMO.

Yeah i'm looking to get either 3.76 or 4.10's, i'm auto trans and I live in a suburban area so city mileage is what my car mostly sees. I'm going to eventually board out the heads, get mid pipes, headers and a tune for performance so hopefully that should give me some big power gains. Thanks man!

What's your motive for increasing your top end speed? A stock Mustang GT on a long straight away will do around 150 mph at around 4100 rpm. Do you want more than that?

Choosing 3.73 or a 4.10 gear will get you running in the higher horsepower and torque areas of the 'curve' and should increase your top end speed. You can use an online speed calculator to determine speed/rpm while changing gear ratios and wheel sizes.

The trick is to get your engine turning in the higher rpm range which can be done in lots of ways such as tune, cam, intake, headers, NOX, super/turbo chargers, etc, etc, etc. Of course, you need to modify your suspension and add safety equipment if you are flying around a race track.

It's all a lot of fun and excitement until you crash. So, make good decisions here. Again, what's the purpose of increasing your top speed?

You guys know what Bellairs was trying to say.
And I don't think that he is trying to increase his top speed, he just doesn't want it to decrease with the addition of the gears.

Like escottcarp said, the numerically higher gear can potentially increase the top speed number, by putting the engine in a more favorable RPM range in overdrive.

I'm still running the factory 3.27 gears in my Mustang. Hopefully next spring I'll upgrade to 4.10 gears. I need to get my account at work paid down first. Got nearly $2000 charged up between current Mustang mods, and a major repair on my Ranger truck.

Top speed for these cars on the street is not worth worrying about. If you are drag racing you aren't going to top out and you sure as hell should not be going triple digits on the street anyway.

4.10s or even 4.30s for a 4.6L NA bolt on street car depending on your rear tire size.
