Rattling sound

I have a 2001 GT with an auto, minor bolt-ons, and just under 150K miles.

While cruising on the freeway the other day I noticed a rattling sound at about 65-70 MPH. It only kicks in when I push the pedal down about an inch, but goes away if I accelerate harder. It kicks in again when I slightly let off the gas, but then goes away if I completely let off.

It sounds like putting baseball cards in bicycle spokes, but with a more metallic sound. It's not too loud, but then again this is at freeway speed with an American Thunder cat-back. Any idea what is causing this?

Could be a few things, such as an exhaust leak. Sometimes these only present themself under a certain amount of load. Have you done anything to the exhaust?

You can further confirm this if you turn the car on, and plug up the tail pipes. Then listen under the hood and around the car.

I wouldn't suggest plugging up the exhaust, because if there is no exhaust leak, that can be bad news for the engine, it's easier to just crawl under and look at the couplings.

I haven't done anything to the exhaust. The system was installed in 01 or 02, about the same time I got the car.

Also, I heard the rattle just slightly while driving home yesterday at freeway speed even with my foot off the pedal. Not sure if that makes a difference, but I just want to make sure nothing bad is about to happen.
