New Edge People

Going to look at a 2001 GT Vert tomorrow.
I gave up on my foxbody dreams. (can't find anything worthy of being a DD)

I know what to look for as far as appearance, engine, tranny, leaking fluids.

The guy has an offroad bbk x pipe and flowmasters for exhaust, but says there is a check engine light that came on when he got the offroad x pipe installed.

Does this sound right??? What would I need to do to get rid of it??

Probably doesn't have cats due to the o/r pipe a tuner will turn off the check engine light but I would run it by autozone have them scan for codes and see what else there is just to make sure the check engine light is only on for the o/r pipe

look into "spark plug non foulers" for the rear 02 sensors if you need a cheap alternative to buying a tuner. otherwise, a tuner will get rid of it and disregard rear 02 sensors. the non foulers will trick the 02 sensors into getting the reading it wants.

He may be missing all cats since its an o/r pipe check if it has any cats left but yes anti foulers is a cheap alternative

I had the same issue when I installed my off-road x. Got myself a bama tuner from am and the lights gone for good. Also found that you could clear it with an obd 2 scanner for a couple hours if needed

Regarding the CEL issue:

1- yes an offroad x or H pipe will throw a post-cat O2 sensor code 10/10 times

2- You can get rid of the code with a Tune or by tricking the ECU into thinking it is getting the signal it wants from those rear O2 sensors.

What those rear O2 sensors do is monitor the health of your cat converters. O/R x and H pipes don't have cats, so your ECU wont be getting the go-ahead from those sensors anymore.

Those sensors do not have a say in what AFR your engine runs. That is the job of the other O2 sensors. All these do is monitor cat health. You don't give a **** about cat health. You only have to "simulate" that voltage signal from the O2 sensor to keep the ECU happy. Lie to your ECU with these: SVE Mustang MIL Eliminators (O2 Sensor Simulators) (96-04) CEL will leave. Also, you can make those simulators for $3 if you are competent with electronics at all.

This is good advice.. I done the same exact thing when I test drove my car because he said the check engine light was do to it not having cats.. Ran it by autozone and they confirmed that was the cause for it being on.. I would defiantly recommended a tuner though or something to get rid of that light because you will never know when you do have a problem cause that light will always be on..

Sounds right. No cats will cause the CEL to come on. Is the car auto or 5 speed? Check the tranny fluid and make sure there's no grinding if 5 speed.

It's a good excuse to get a tune, since it's off road everyone's right there probably isn't cats so just get a tune and have the tuner shut off the cats, I have my cats and EGR deleted and my MPT tune took care of my lights

Yeah he said it has no cats.
He also suggested taking it to autozone to prove that it was just the cats causing the CEL.

If I have a sct sf3 or whatever it's called for my 2012 v6, will it work for this 2001 gt?

Oh dang, that's not going to happen.
Guess I'll need a seperate tuner for this Stang.

Makes sense though, so you can't just tune all your buddies cars for free.

So I went and looked at a 2001 coupe and everything was good for the most part.
Only thing wrong was a front end squeak/grunt when you turned the wheel.
What is that???

Thats what I was thinking. Sounded just like a 96 grand marquis that a lady I work with has. Made the same noise.

He's asking too much but only 108k miles.

Body is straight but paint is pretty ugly

I had a 96 grand marquis and I know EXACTLY what you're talking about haha. Mine was always there, but it never got worse. I even got that car airborne accidently and it never got worse. I tell you what, grand marquis is a handful when it lands from a jump. Yes siree

It feels like the car is going to drive off the road because the steering is SO vague.

The only reason it keeps going straight is because the car was incapable of changing directions without a lot of time and effort haha

FWIW.....
https://answers.yahoo.com/question/i...7212703AAhQrkS

Best answer:

Best Answer: It is against the law to tamper or remove any emissions control device on a vehicle in the United States, either by private owner or by a repair shop. Fines up to $10,000 dollars can occur. Plus, by law, the vehicle cannot be sold legally either. So do yourself a favor, leave it alone or fix it properly.

Merely suggesting that he consider following Federal Law is not trollling............Dude!

I am as entitled to post my opinion about violating the law as you are to ignore it. What if this potential buyer did not know that taking off your catalytic converters violates the law? If/when he tries to trade this car in to a dealer, they will NOT take the car in on trade, and may very well have to report him. Worth the risk? He has to decide based on the best information available to him.

Hahahahaha. Your trying to Troll and you need to stop!.. 1. He is Trying to buy the car!.. Not trade it in!.. 2. No Dealer Ship is going to go through the hassle to report him for Not having cats!.. I've removed the cats off of every car I've owned (minus the Wife's '06 GT) and Never Been reported to Any one for anything!.. 3. A Dealership would have Nothing to Gain from it nor would they have a Customer coming back!.. Lol

I know your "trying to help", but posting an answer that you Copy And Pasted from Yahoo!.. Lol. Looks like your trolling!..

You might get pulled over for being too loud, with no cats. That's about it, around here at least. And that's only if you're acting stupid and flooring it all the time.

And imagine this.........it's still illegal, and has been since cats were required.
I really hope your guy's states start sniffing exhaust like ours here, and you all have to scramble to get your cats back on to get your registration renewed.
It is against the law, folks, and that is all I am stating....have the right to do so too, without being called names here.
I've made my point, and I am going to move on to other posts........be nice if you guys did too.

Breh, I live in TN in bumf&$k nowhere. There is no emissions test here or inspections. Just 30 dollars a year for registration.

I drive past at least 10 cars/trucks a day with no cats and sometimes they are even straight piped. Cops don't care either. It's the south, everyone has loud cars/trucks lol.

As long as you don't live in Nashville TN, emissions are no problem.

+11. I live in Michigan!.. They have emissions testing here!.. Just never unforced!.. Lol. Every One Here with a modded car Of Any Type, has had their cats removed!.. The only thing you get busted for here, is Loud Exhaust!.. One time I got busted for Loud Exhaust in my Monte-Carlo!.. Had to put a new muffler on it!.. Cops looked at the car, saw it was missing the Cats and still said nothing!.. Lol.

I'd end up changing the exhaust on that one anyway, i'd rather have a catted midpipe and "catback exhaust" (even though its really midpipe-back exhaust haha).

Can you please point out the part of the constitution where this power is delegated to the federal government? I must have missed that part. Unless the supreme law of the land was disregarded in the making of this law, I consider it invalid and will run cats or catless as I see fit.

I have cats on my car, but that is because I don't want to buy mil eliminators or screw around with exhaust when it already sounds good

Does this actually work? I have heard of it, but I do not see it as being a consistent/reliable method. The way I understand it, the O2 sensor is just pulled farther out of the exhaust stream, but the exhaust still has some access to the plug. Wouldn't a few WOT pulls expose a lot of rich mixture to the O2 sensor? Would it go away after you return to normal stoichiometric cruising?

Ironically, my state's laws on exhaust are so rarely enforced. That they shouldn't even have them in the first place. Which no one around here takes them seriously.
