Either way I've always been under the impression that 2500 rpm is not really "high rpm" especially when cruising. It's loud and uses more gas, but the engine is able to stay at temp and lubricated. Red line is all the way up at 5400 or so. And as long as you use a good quality oil, you should be well lubricated to sustain faster rotation without causing damage. If your oil was dirty or oil filter clogged and opens up its bypass, then your gonna be tearing your engine apart of course.
