new here, need help on 2000 gt

ok i bought a one owner car 124,000 that had been sitting for awhile a couple weeks ago. Ran great for about a week and CEL comes on, it shows the p0455 code. I went to oreillys and bought a new cap, doesnt fix it. i noticed the donut gasket from the fill tube has gotten torn so i pulled the tank last weekend and changed it and made sure all the vents and lines coming off the tank werent clogged with dirt dobbers. Unhooked the battery and the light goes off. Ive been driving it all week this week and i usually fill up every day before work(80 miles round trip) well this week i let it get down to a little below a 1/4 tank and today it starts running rough like spitting sputtering, high idle then really low and the CEL comes back on. I drove it on lunch and got them to run the code and its the p0455 code again. Im thinking i may have a fuel filter full of trash or water but im wondering why it running rough made it throw the fuel system leak code again? any ideas, thanks

You may have a dirty fuel filter but that is not the cause of the code. If you are sure that the gas cap is sealing correctly, and you know that the grommet is good, you have eliminated the two most common causes. The next thing to check is the Purge Valve. If I remember correctly, when they become stuck in the open position, they can cause this code.

OK thanks I'll check that out. It just threw me off cuz the CEL has been off the past week and now it shows back up. I was just wondering if maybe it like backfiring or whatever might've confused it or something but I'll look at that thanks again!

Ya typically a evap code does not cause running issues, on some occasions i e seen valves on evap stick and it pretty much vapor lock the gas but u would know cuz the gas cap would make a loud swoosh ( more so then normal ) ... But thats rare... If all ur evap lines look ok under the car and to the motor and all then ull need to go to a shop and ask for a smoke test because sometimes theres a pin hole that ud never see, plus it would tell u if anything else leaking like intake and All, but before u do any of that eliminate the purge valve and selenoids cuz thats the less costly and most common problems, if all is well then prob be best for a smoke test, they pull vacuum line and hook this smoke machine up to it and fill ur lines with harmless smoke and check it over, as far as it spittin and sputtering thats a miss and when it does it try get it do it alot for a min so the ecu can pick it up, cuz a random missfire code is a pita but a misfire cyl 1 code is much easier, but till u get a code on it its kind of a guessing game, its also possible u could have gotten some watered down gas and it sucked a lil bit water up , could be a coil pack, anything, but usually evap usually wont make it spit and sputter , hope this helps some and if any new codes come up let us know

After making repairs to the fuel system & you want to treat the entire system,.....
Techron, Redline, and Royal Purple are 3 of a just few fuel treatments that actually work, and works well. PEA concentrate percentage is high. I use it 4-5 times a year, just prior to an oil change also. Ethanol sucks, you have to combat it's side effects. Plays havoc on ecoboost engines, direct injection engines.

I have nothing against LUCUS, but do some research & give the above products a chance. PEA content within fuel treatment products.
BITOG and laboratory results, ect..

I used to suck a half can of sea foam through my vac lines on my 00 neon after every deployment. Put other half in gas and drove it like I stole it. 279,000 miles on the little basterd, 4 deployments, 2 teenagers, and its still in my driveway and fires up right away..tho the tranny is trashed. Either they made those 2.4t engines bulletproof or royal purple + yearly sea foam works
