CEL P0340

So my check engine light came on a couple minutes after cranking it (it had been sitting a couple days). When I got a chance to stop, I checked and cleared the code. It didn't come on for about 10 minutes. I stopped to get gas also and after cranking it again it still wasn't on. Then about 5 minutes after that it did.
P0340
Camshaft position (cmp)
A ck t (b1 or single sensor)

I checked the alternator by unhooking the battery while it was running and it still ran. Would this just be the sensor needing replacing? I also saw on here that it could be the crankshaft position sensor. What would cause it to throw a code if not? Is it alright to drive with the code till I get it fixed? Thanks

Your alternator may be charging enough to keep the engine running, but it could still be defective and trigger a P0340 code. A reputable automotive electrical shop should be able to test it.
Check the wiring and the connector to the cam sensor for any damage

This is one of those codes that can be difficult to diagnose without the proper testing equipment, and knowledge. Many people just start throwing parts at it until it is repaired.

Just an update...

The battery light came on and caused my gauges to cut off (not the gauge lights though). So I pulled over and cranked it back up and the light would flicker on and off, along with the gauges cutting on and off. I'm not sure if the headlights ever cut off or not. I replaced the alternator and everything has went back to normal....except for the a squealing that sort of sounds like the belt, loudest when the engine is cold (checked it and no rips or anything and lined up correctly).

could just be an old dry stiff belt. especially when cold. worst case maybe a bad pulley causing drag until it warms up. likely the belt.

I just don't see why it'd be doing it now. There wasn't any noise before

Check your air conditioner pulley/clutch assembly. I have seen it cause the very issue you have stated. It can seize up and cause problems

It was a rebuilt one from advance. I'll check the air conditioner stuff and swap alternators this weekend to see if the sound goes away

It could be that the alternator is working correctly now, so it is causing more of a load on the belt, than it was before.
