Rear Ended

stopped at a red light ready to make a right hand turn when an suv bumps into me from behind. I pull up and off to the side get out and I only see some scuff marks. I tell the other driver I will drive up the road a bit and make sure everything is okay. he starts to follow me and I hear rattling so I go to pull over into a parking lot and he takes off.

At home now I figured out the rattle is the heat shield for my driver side exhaust. it broke off and I managed to wiggle it out and the rattle is gone.

is there anything else I should check for?
car seems to drive straight and stop straight still.
should I be concerned or just chock it up to a lost heat shield

I would take it to a collision shop and see if they will inspect it quick for a few bucks

Did not get a plate number? In most states, its illegal to drive away from an accident scene.

well if its less then 1000 dollars damage the police wont come out you have to go in and report it.
I would like to know if there is anything I should be looking for to know if the impact caused any actual damage besides a scuff mark and the heat shield for the muffler falling off.

As another member suggested, the only way to know for sure is to get it on a lift and have it checked out.

I wouldn't you could get yourself in trouble like a ticket if you drive from the scene also and trying to get somebody else in trouble. If you get in an accident you should Alway contact the local police to make sure everything is legal and insurance takes care of you. If it drives like it did before it's okay. Better off getting a reputable shop to look at it.

Phone the cops; tell them just what happened; even if your vehicle get damaged while in a parking lot from an unknown person, it's a hit & run.

Not here in va, parking lots are private property someone can bang ur stuff up and run and u can get plate number and all and if they dont want to give u there insurance info they dont have to, kind of screwed up but i know from experience... Police cant force the issues on private property but on the public road then its a hit n run, u should have called police regaurdless and get info then later if ur car not bad it be up to u to persue it

i know it's private property & all that...
but here we don't have private insurance, it's government;
so, if there is a hit & run, you file a report with the cops & the insurance company.

...just because you are on private property, you still have to obey the law.🙄

yeah, here in Saskatchewan, we just have SGI, the government insurance, then you can get extra coverage, of course through insurance brokers.
so, if you had a hit & run, the just file a report with the police, & SGI, & they take care of it all.
our insurance here is about $100/month.

once, my dad was in a mall parking lot, & a lady ran a stop sign & dented his car.

This is why you always get info at the site of the accident. And take pics immediately of the other car, the plates and the person driving and then the damage.
