01 gt automatic will not come out of park

If the battery is uhooked and the key is turned on, it will shift fine. The car will start in neutral and allow you to shift to all gears. When you put it back in park, it is locked back up and will not come back out of park. What's the problem?

I wish I could think of the name right now, but it sounds like the little solenoid on the back of the brake pedal. To confirm this, see if your brake lights are coming on when you hit the brakes...if they don't come on, there's your problem.

Well, it's not a solenoid, but the brake light switch. This link is what I was talking about.

Or the solonoid that locks the shifter in park, if brake lights work check if solonoid is getting power,if it is and not releasing the solonoid is bad

All of the above.

Start at the brake switch. If that, and the wiring and connector are in good shape, check for voltage at the shifter lock solenoid.

Mustangs are bad to break the wires going to brake light switch .check your brake lights first and go from there

No, sorry brother. One of the guys I work with, his son has one. They had been working on it for a couple of days. I know they had trouble with it before with the active alarm. I kept thinking it was related to that. The guys on here nailed it tho. Thanks again guys.

01 gt automatic will not come out of park

Had this same problem on my '95 T/A. It happened as the weather got colder. The colder it was, the longer I would have to let the car run before I could shift out of park. Close to 10 minutes eventually, and also got to the point where it happened in warm weather. Once I did get it out of park, it was fine for the rest of the day.

Everyone was saying brake light switch. I had it in to the dealer and they couldn't figure it out. After a couple years of dealing with it, I found out there was a shifter solenoid switch under the console. I replaced that and has worked perfectly for the last 5 years.

I know it's a different car, but worth looking into whether you have a shifter solenoid switch also because the brake light switch took me down a dead path.

My son had the same problem with his Altima. The problem was a blown fuse that controlled the brake light switch.
