Auto transmission problems

2000 mustang gt with 224000 on her. Transmission started slipping or lagging while going into over drive. Also the over drive light is flashing. Fluid and filter gets changed every 50,000 miles. Last change there was no debris in the pan or on the magnet. Plus after I got home you could smell the heat from the trans. Any suggestions as to what it might be and options for repair/replacement would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Auto transmission problems

It could be a problem with the TCC solenoid. If it's going bad it can do that. But you can try an oil additive that I use with excellent results. It's called DR tranny torque converter shudder eliminator. I don't have the same symptoms as you just shudder at 35-40. I added 2 tubes of it and it's been gone for 1200 miles since my last trans oil change. You may as well try it and see if it goes away before spending a lot of money.

Well first place I took my car to said the over drive band is bad and they don't rebuild. They suggested a jasper transmission for 2500 with a 3yr 100000 mile warranty. Seems steep but I never had much luck using junkyard parts so getting a rebuild seems a better idea. Any thoughts?

Yeah I looked online for reviews on jasper engines and transmissions and found lots of bad reviews. Bad parts and worse warranty/customer service.

Check the price for a rebuilt transmission from Ford. They have become more competitively priced in recent years and generally have a good warranty that is honored at any dealership.

I paid $1500 as well for mine. I recently got it rebuild with a converter and a shift kit installed.

I know, right? 224,000 miles! Crazy stuff.

And he wouldn't need clutches luckily, so one less thing to buy

Whoops. They wear out much slower, I'd assume though, right?

From what I can tell the only problem is the over drive. Either the power band is worn out or the solenoid is bad that engages it or both.

Get yours rebuilt or pull one with lower miles and a warranty out of a 2004. Rebuilt will make it 04+ spec which is a 4R75w and much stronger.

If you get one shipped from somewhere, get one from Silverfox. Just google them.
