New stereo

Anybody running a double din Pioneer? I'm looking at AVH-X3800BHS.

This unit has a parking brake setup, which I've never dealt with before. There's a wire around on Amazon I was considering too- thoughts? Apparently grounding this wire doesn't work anymore...

This will be for my 03 Mustang, which is why I posted here and not the audio/video forum (I never look there anyway and didn't think it gets as much traffic)

Edited: here's the links to what I'm looking at
http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-AVH-X3...ds=avhx3800bhs

Thanks!

I've got a Pioneer in my car now, so depending how good of job it was installed before (previous owner had it "professionally" installed) I might be alright on the harness. Gosh I hope so... I hate it when people cut factory plugs and I honestly have no idea if they goofed up the Mach 460 in any way.

Something about DVD playback and maybe some other features don't work unless the brake is set.

I don't care about DVDs playing while I drive (or at all) but don't want it to affect what I want it to do.

its a ground wire. its supposed to ground when you have your parking brake pulled up. you can literally ground it to the chassis of the stereo or anywhere that is metal and grounded. at that point, it is up to you to be responsible not to be distracted by any videos playing while you drive. without it being grounded to anything, then when you play a video it will show a blank screen.

EDIT: should have read your whole post. it works on a kenwood. but do some more research. i always heard that the parts you can buy to bypass it are a waste. but without it being attached where its supposed to be should only disable videos.

Anybody with satellite radio? Trying to decide where I'll mount the antenna... I have the SiriusXM kit that I might run tomorrow while I'm waiting for stuff to come in (I ordered the Pioneer unit)

I put mine right next to the radio antenna. Routes easily behind carpet and to the door, up the panel and right on the metal of the fender. I wanted to put it on the trunk but unfortunately fiberglass isn't magnetic.

Screw satellite radio. Its losing money and might not be around in 5-10 years anyway. Just get a stereo with a mirror setup for iphone or android (whatever you use) and mirror your phone to the double DIN screen. Then use your streaming service of choice or load a bunch of music to your phone and stream directly over Bluetooth. Or get something with a front USB and get a low profile 64GB USB drive and there is your entire music library.

That's another dead tech TBTH... optical media. No need for CD/DVD in anything anymore. At all. My new computer I just built doesn't even have one and I never used the one in my last setup after 2010.

I have a pretty large CD collection... Mostly in storage but if I can buy the CD for the same price as digital and upload it to my iTunes, I'll typically do that.

Since we have Sirius for my wife's new rig, I might as well be taking advantage of it. I'm paying for it, right?

I don't care to stream audio on my phone. Verizon has a way of screwing data usage over and I don't give them the chance- I go with wifi almost all the time.

I switched to T-Mo as soon as VZW jacked the grandfathered unlimited data from $30 to $50/mo. They paid for all my switching costs. Back on unlimited with a better package for less $$$.

And you don't HAVE to pay for Sirius, I'm sure you can cancel. And CDs can all be ripped to MP3s easily enough.

But whatevs. I mean you do you obviously. Lots of automakers are actually stopping with CD players in stereos. I know the F150 is doing that.

Well we got a few months free and then a few more months at a bargain price... So in October we'll have to decide what we are doing.

I looked at a couple double din units that didn't have CD players and considered trying to find a CD changer to mount in the trunk but that got to be a more expensive project than I wanted.

Changers... why... 1992 called, they want their tech back... You have iTunes, just burn everything to iTunes and then if you have a home server setup you can stream directly to your phone and into the stereo. Your new car does not have iCar or whatever its called?

And for streaming/music/whatever... highly recommend switching to an unlimited data plan. Sprint is horrible but T-Mo is really good and you can get it on ATT too if you have DirecTV. Before the cost of the phones I pay under $100 for 2 lines, unlimited everything, 7gb of tethering per phone, free Rhapsody premium service and they really expanded their network and speed over the last year.

Anyway...

We are stuck in a contract for a little while longer... And then I want to make some changes.

T-Mobile sucks around here. I had Sprint for seven years and liked them but then I moved up Western Kansas for work and had no service there.

Even after the new tower rollout? And no stuck on contract now, any other carrier will buy you out up to $650 per line.

Yeah... I'd be fine switching to AT&T but my wife is convinced the service at her parents will suck. AT&T is the only service that works where she teaches and I'd like to switch just for that reason alone.

Do you both have iphones? Do her parents have wifi? iphones will call over wifi just like over the towers. So will all T-Mo phones because they load the program onto Androids. I get LTE outside my house but for some reason it is a black hole inside so we just jump on the wifi and good to go.

Well you could always pick up a $10 used att flip phone and then buy a prepaid ATT sim and throw it in there and see what happens at her parents house. Otherwise just stick with the overpriced suck that is VZW. And not able to stream music to your car.

There is also Slacker Radio that lets you cache your stations with a premium subscription so everything refreshes on your wifi overnight and then you can listen to your music as much as you want with no data usage or even when you have no signal.

Its a competitor to Pandora and all them. Its the most like satellite radio I have found. Has set stations for anything you can think of and if you are a premium member you can set up "station caching". It actually does not take up a ton of storage space and if you have like 10 stations cached you can listen to them even with zero service. Also means no data usage if you are not on an unlimited plan. I used to have mine set to auto update every night at like 2 AM even tho I had unlimited data. Convenient if out of a coverage range or in a building etc...

Installed!

I have more work to do, need to hide some wires (USB, sat antenna, phone mic) but it was cold and dark when I got the radio in last night.

I routed the usb wire up into the glove box. Auxiliary cord is still just hanging from the side. And satellite wire is tucked behind the carpet on the passenger side by the firewall.

I was thinking about taping the antenna kinda behind/above the rear view mirror on the windshield and hiding wire along the headliner.

I hadn't thought about the glove box for the USB... I bought a panel dash mount USB that I thought I'd drill a hole and put in by my cigarette lighter. Come to think of it, I do like that glove box idea. I'll ponder it 👍🏻

I didn't run a 1/8 stereo auxiliary, didn't think I'd ever need it. I could've gotten a USB with the stereo plug in also.

Looks nice! - I have a Pioneer 8100NEX - the installer hid the mic where they synch mic was and put the gps under the dash where the gps that came with my Mustang was and he ran USB's to the console so no hanging wires. But I have the navigation etc - but I LOVE the stereo the music sounds great - the loudest I can put it is 1/2 or I would blow out my speakers and myself out of the car. LOL. Enjoy!

Thanks! Your setup looks good! I think I'll do a pretty good job hiding wires, I used to do installs at a place I worked in college and some on the side. And I'm picky.
