Thermostat for mach 1

Car today started overheating thanks to a bad radiator pressure cap releasing fluid. Im seeing that this might be a good time to get a colder thermostat but im seeing that i might need a tune and some of these colder thermostats cost a huge amount of money. Wondering is it a good idea to change it to a colder one sense these cars are know for being really hot?

I think that I would try a new thermostat first.
I was having a problem with my truck running a little warm a while back, and decided to try a Motorcraft thermostat, rather than the style commonly found at the "box" auto parts stores. So far it has worked flawlessly. They cost about double what a typical thermostat usually costs, but you can see right away that they are better constructed.
Rockauto has them for about $15.

If you do wind up replacing the thermostat, make sure you burp the cooling system or you will continue to overheat due to air bubbles caught in the system.
