Pulleys and Charging System

I think I have a problem with my pulleys. Could a bad pulley or pulleys cause the engine to run like crap through a specific RPM range? Could it also cause the battery light to come off and on?

It squeaks real bad in the winter and was going to change the pulleys because of that, but wanted to see if it would cause any of the above. I changed the belt too. Thanks

Although the pulleys could be the cause of the squeaking noise, it is unlikely that they are the cause of your battery light and driveability problems.
You should begin the diagnosis process by having the charging system (alternator/battery) tested.

keep an eye on your alternator pulley. if its locking up and causing the belt to squeal against it, that could be why your battery light comes on. if your alternator isnt spinning, then it wont produce enough voltage, and if the voltage is below 13v or so then the battery light will come on because the battery is not being charged. it may be something else causing your engine to slow down though. cant say with this little info.

Helps to know what year car also. A slipping belt will affect the charging system along with other things. Bad voltage will cause numerous issues with drivabilty

I almost hijacked this thread to ask about under drive pulleys. I will try to start a new thread in a bit.

I thought about under drive pulleys due to the OP's issue. Are the pulleys stock?

Underdrive pulley's won't affect how the car runs. It just slows down the accessories. For the most part pullys don't squeak, the belt squeaks. Put on new pullys and an old belt, you'll have the exact same issues.
